9NEWS reporter Dana Knowles has more on the case. 9NEWS at 6 p.m. March 24, 2005.

DOUGLAS COUNTY - A teacher at Ponderosa High School in Douglas County is in custody and is accused of having several sexual encounters with a student at the school. The student is younger than 18 years old.

Thirty-five-year-old Nicole Andrea Barnhart faces child sex assault charges including sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust with a pattern of abuse.

Police say Barnhart had sex with the student on several occasions in Parker.

The Douglas County School District placed her on administrative leave Wednesday.

Barnhart, accompanied by her attorney, turned herself in to authorities Wednesday evening.

Barnhart is in custody at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office Detention Facility. Her bond is set at $50,000.

Nicole Barnhart started working for Douglas County schools in 1995. She had been at Ponderosa High since 2002.

Yeah, probably. It's just the latest fad in journalism to report these kinds of stories now. Ever notice how certain kinds of stories become popular for a while, then fade away? I'm sure the crimes don't fade away, it's just no longer trendy to report on that topic.

Shark attacks in Florida a couple of years ago. Female teachers boinking students are the new shark attacks for the media.
