They mean "for sale."
I guess this is a giant "f.u. consumer" list. All the 198 companies listed are being dicks - insisting on eternal premium pricing. No sale for you. Just pretend discounts now and then. For promo purposes.

Yeah, I kind of blame the brands - but ... could be Dick's fault too.

"Everything in the store is on sale" scam.
While not as bad as the Dick's exclusion list, I was shopping for a new laptop for the last 3-4 days (current one is going bad), and had priced three different Dell laptops that were sale at the time.

I checked back last evening after Dell sent me an email about their "Black Friday" sale being live, yet even with the coupon codes, all three were more expensive than they were when I first looked at them. I guess if a retailer says "Black Friday", people buy it without researching so they don't "miss" out. Raise the MSRP here, increase the price of upgrades there, and then slap a % off percentage.

Brands I wanted. Nike, New Balance and Under Armour. They have been on sale in the past so I'm not sure they are at fault

Yeah some sites are like that and it's annoying. eBags is another one like that. Almost everything is "on sale" all the time so excluded from promo codes and special sales

How can it be a "scam" when they are telling you exactly what items are excluded? Or were you expecting honesty in advertising with no fine print.

One site advertises "up to 60% Off Everything!" The thing I wanted has FREE SHIPPING! It always has free shipping. Bust.

It's not a scam. It's just doing business. They know how the human brain works and they attack it with strategies like limited availability, nostolgia, dropping the dollar sign, pricing their items .99, upselling, cross selling, a feeling of belonging, etc. In regards to limited availability have you ever gone on Amazon and when looking at an item they have that note to the side, "only 3 left. Order within the next 2 hours to make sure your supply last." Yea, stuff like that.

No one is holding you hostage. Just don't purchase that item if it makes you angry.

Damn, one needs to know Visual Basic just to ascertain what they can Buy.

Come on, now... It's 2019. The DevOps millennial gang is going to insist that you write that program in Python or Ruby :)

Oh, and I can't forget the obligatory "Dick's Sucks!" comment. I stopped shopping with them after they caved to the anti gun crowd and pretty much stopped selling anything gun related here in Connecticut.
