I have an 88 Toyota Celica with a manual transmission. It's a FWD car. The front wheels (the drive wheels) will not turn more than 30 degrees, i.e. if I have the car jacked up and I put my hand at 12 o'clock, I can turn the wheel to 11 o'clock and then it stops. That is the full extent of the wheel's travel. It's the same on both front wheels.

When I turn the car on, the engine works fine, and the transmission does too.... I can put it in 1st gear and slowly let out the clutch like I'm starting to drive, and it'll move forward an inch before hitting the limit. Same with putting it in reverse. Same with just pushing the car while it's in neutral. The parking brake isn't engaged, and it never worked very well anyway so I can't imagine that that's the problem.

Any advice, or ideas as to what the hell could cause this? I really don't need a costly repair right now. :(

Perhaps you have a seized CV joint.

edit: upon further consideration, perhaps not....hmmmm.....

Sounds like it could be engaged into two gears at once.

It's got a cable operated shifter. The cables could be FUBARed. That might cause it. In fact, pray for it, because that's the only way it's going to be cheap.

Good luck.

Ah, that sounds more likely, since both wheels turn the same amount.

hmmm! interesting. I've had problems with the shifter in the past, so it could very well be that the cables are fux0red. I'll mess around with it.... thanks guys! :) How much would a fix for this cost?
