yet another car audio thread

edit: to clarify: i already have the wiring harness. it doesn't do the job. that's not what i'm referencing in the post, unless you know of a $70 wiring harness.

i have a 2002 olds intrigue that i just bought a JVC arsenal deck for.

LITTLE DID I KNOW... that GM decided to do everything ass-backwards after 1999 and there is no longer any 12V line tied to the accessory or ignition power to signal the deck turn on. i actually managed to turn on the security, check engine, low trac, and service vehicle soon lights somehow.

so i'm told there's some kind of adapter, but it's like $70 US. so WTF? is there any way around this? right now i just have the red from the deck tied to the yellow constant so i have to manually turn it off. but the deck is sweet, it reads SD cards 😀

thx

Yes, the wiring harness adaptors are your friend! Check Crutchfield.com, they should have one for your car listed. Unfortunately, modern GM cars seem to do a lot of the warning systems through the radio. You'll probably loose the ability to check tire pressure (if equipped), or your idiot lights and so on.

But either way, definately get the adaptor to avoid hacking apart the wiring harness and completely screwing things up.

go to your fuse box, find a fuse that is always hot, and tie your constant wire to that.

Problem solved.

EDIT: find one that only comes on with ignition. Sorry I misread your post.

everything seems to be normal now. the idiot lights all came on when i was messing around with a test light. there's a class 2 serial line going to the radio that transmits the VIN to it every time you start the car for security purposes that i shorted out.

so i figure i just have to hunt around for a switched 12V line to hook up to the harness i have already.

...that is not even close to my problem.

then what exactly is your problem? I can help you with this, but I am confused as to what you're exact problem is.

ok...you can do this a couple ways. You can buy the expensive items or call a local car audio place and find a T harness. We sell them for about $20. The bad news is that you are going to have to keep and hide your factory deck somewhere in your car. We usually use the trunk since there is plenty of room there.

This is not an easy install. But it is very doable. The T harness basically splits off your factory power, ground and speaker wires to an aftermarket deck. You then extend your factory harness wires to whatever length is needed to hide your factory deck.

er, actually, everything works except the ignition switch. the pin doesn't even line up with anything on the harness, and i can't find anything on the stock harness with a test light that would do the job. so it never turns on. so for now i have it tied to a constant 12V. it can't stay like this. the idiot lights went out after i connected then disconnected the stock radio. alldatadiy.com tells me there's a couple wires actually tied behind the fuse box that are switched that are for auxiliary power, so i'll look into that tomorrow.

ok...you are really confusing me. Ate you just trying to find out what to hook up the red wire to, are are you worried about your check engine light...etc?

I'll bring this one back up: InstallDR might be able to help best. It should have a wiring diagram and what each pinout on the stock harness is. Finding a switched line behind the fuse box is an excellent idea, and probably would work best. Good luck!
