Yet another Antec Earthwatts 380w question...can it run the X1650PRO?

Being a relative newbie to the significant power requirements of modern vid cards (I'm running an X800PRO), I am not sure if my system can handle the X1650PRO since it seems to have significant requirements. The box says that it requires 38A on the 12V rails, but I am not sure that's accurate since a power supply with that amperage runs well over 500 watts from what I could tell.

The website says something about "ensure the power supply is designed to accommodate a high-end graphics card with peak dissipation above 75 watts", which doesn't mean much to me.

Any thoughts? I'm inclined to think it might because of the other EA380 thread on here, but I want some additional input before I jump on the vid card deal that I found locally ($30 for the 512MB version).

Thanks in advance.

[edit] I guess I should add that I'm running an Athlon X2-4200 with 2 HDD, one optical drive.

The EA380 will easily be able to power a x1650. I don't know where they got the 38amp requirement from

I doubt that it stated 38A (28A is a possibility), but in any event the recommendation is for the entire system.

The X1650 Pro lacks a PCIe connector therefore it will consume <75W under full load. The EarthWatts 380 is a fine solution and would easily power an ATI HD3870 when you want to upgrade.

No, really -- I wrote it down. It says 38A on the box.

Great, thanks for the help to both of you. I'd love to upgrade to the 3870, but $30 is about all I can spare right now. :)

Are you sure you have an x1650 Pro and not an x1950 Pro? 75W is what the PCI-E slot can supply. If your card needs more than that, it will require an additional power plug (typically the 6 pin PCI-E plug). AFAIK no x1650 Pro for PCI-E requires it.

It's definitely the 1650 and not the 1950 as I would be incredibly excited to find a 1950 for $30. ;) Check Diamond's page for the 1650 -- the 75watt figure is in the specs.

I'm not sure that going from an X800 Pro to a X1650 Pro is an upgrade. Your X800 Pro still works?

I'd guess the X1650 Pro probably uses less power.

i got in on the recent $20AR EA380 for my current rig - replacing a TP480W unit due to a possible bad cap - can't tell if it is dust or the cap is leaking but for $20 it is cheap insurance.

rig is:
x2 4200 @ ~2.4
2x15K u320
x1800xt

and 4-6fans and i am not worried about it at all. the specs for the tp480 and ea380 are only i think 1A on one line and 3A on the other 12V line different....

also picked up a kill-a-watt - will be interesting to see how they compare
