So what 70"-80" plasma did you have that made fan noise?

I have a 60" plasma with ZERO fan noise.

the only plasmas larger then 70 inches that i know of are made by panasonic pro line. the TH-85PF12U and the TH-85VX200U, they both had a few models preceding them but they are rare and stupidly expensive.

Exactly, that is why I asked the question. Fan noise is complete BS, and I know he didn't have a 70"+ plasma to begin with. Just more plasma FUD. If you are hearing fan noise, you either have a bad plasma or your plasma doesn't have enough ventilation as a result the fans spin at high speeds to get rid of the heat.

As far as heat, yes they do generate quite a bit of heat and the bigger you go, the more heat will be produced. The new plasmas though do a better job and don't produce as much heat. However, I'm sure the 85" Panasonic plasma generates a large amount of heat and their 150" plasma must be like a freakin' wall of fire. Whatever room that plasma is installed in, it better have it's own thermostat to control the temperature.

I'm still amazed at how great the VT30 I have is compared to my prior tv. Haven't seen anything else in person that looks better since it's been calibrated. I'm also a fan of 3D and have been watching everything including kids movies.

To each his own. For a dedicated viewing room, a projector is great. In a living room setup, I'd take a flat panel over a projector any day of the week.

And I normally have the opposite reaction. When I go to the theaters (which is RARE), I'm like "meh, I have better PQ at home." Quality over quantity for me. ;)

You have not seen quality if you haven't seen a properly set up and calibrated modern home theater projector in a light controlled room. And I'm talking being picky, such as dropping the projector down with a mount extension to minimize lens shift and prevent chroma aberration, etc. Most think projectors as a crappy conference room projector on a bookshelf pointed at a bare painted wall.

Its not just the size. Wall-E on a AE4000 will floor your jaw and slice your eyeballs open with candy coated razor blades and leave you pissing rainbows. ;)

You haven't seen quality until you've seen a Pioneer Elite 09FD BD player playing the Avatar BD on a ISF calibrated Pioneer Elite 141FD. You can go bigger, but you ain't getting better. ;)

I still have two last model kuros. One in my wife's tv room 60" and our bedroom 50". No better TV yet :).

Yep. I have the 141FD in the living room and the 111FD in my other room. Love both of them and wouldn't trade them for anything out there. And I bought them in 2008 and early 2009. Hell of a future proof investment.

Too bad I missed out on the Kuro's. Plasma sets definitely got a leg up on overall PQ but I think only home theater nerds make a big deal out of it.

Very true. I'm fine with my lcd. You just have to turn off all that "image enhancing" stuff that actually makes the image look like a cheap soap opera. Don't know a better way to describe it.

I still think CRT looks the best, but I couldn't justify the size of a good CRT projector... nor did I want to deal with the costs/electricity usage.

1080p DLP projector works well for my use... (I'm not sensitive enough to notice any rainbow effect with my Mitsu 3800.) I do wish projectors with an auto-iris were a lot cheaper or proper LED projectors were available and affordable (as in, each individual pixel is isolated to have it's own light source .... meaning true 0 black levels and multimillion contrast ratios)

You're right, the experts\enthusiast make a big deal about the Pioneer Kuro's since it is THE reference flat panel all others are measure against. The average Joe on the other hand would be impressed with a big Vizio TV and a sweet Bose system. But that doesn't really say much. :p Ignorance is bliss for most consumers.

As for plasma vs LCD, the Sharp Elite LCD has taken the top spot...well, almost. Once Sharp issues a firmware update to fix the cyan issue (should be here in a couple of weeks), it should solidify it's ranking of top flat panel. You gotta pay to play though. Cutting edge technology doesn't come cheap.

I think its more than just ignorance - I think theres also an issue of 'good enough'. That 50" TV might not be the best but its good enough because its larger than the 42" I am replacing. The $500 TV is good enough because its $500

Of course it doesn't help when manufacturers play marketing games - TVs with 2trillion:1 contrast ratios etc
