I think the key is motion. Even top of the line LCD screens still have a very slight ghosting issue, and it will never really go away due to the architecture of the technology.

But Plasma's motion is as good as a CRT and the improvement in motion in noticeable, though subtle.
 
The new Sony HX929 and Sharp Elite's do very well with motion handling. Plasmas do not ghost, but will exhibit green phosphor trails with very fast motion (most often seen in gaming). Panasonic were the worst when it came to green trails but have gotten better.

And no, even the BEST plasmas today don't measure up to the 21" Sony Trinitron I bought in 2000, when it comes to motion handling. That thing was a BEAST! I wouldn't trade my plasma for it though. 🙂
 
Also even 720p plasmas are ridiculously sharp, with crazy black levels. I <3 Plasma. One big problem with your Trinitron: Consistency in sharpness at different resolutions/refresh, lack of digital inputs, limiting the resolution to around 1280x1024 over VGA right?

My Trinitron (Sony G500) had a 2048 x 1536 @ 75Hz max resolution using VGA. In comparison, the best plasma has a 72Hz refresh rate at 1920x1080 and the best Panasonic has (VT series) has a 96Hz refresh rate. Yes, there were other negatives like the lack of digital input, geometry issues (it was a pain to get the geometry close to perfect), 5:4 format, limited to 21" size (max 24"), took up a ridiculous amount of space and also produced a ridiculous amount of heat, but the motion handling was second to none. The thing was blistering fast, with EACH frame being fully displayed. No BS LCD motion tricks and no green plasma phosphor trails. The thing was AWESOME when it came to motion and black levels.

That being said, again, I wouldn't not trade my plasma for it.

In case you don't know, right now is the best time to buy a new tv. There is a glut of unsold TVs ATM, and you won't be seeing prices this cheap this time next year, according to various retail and industry sources. At least in the larger sizes, like 46 inches and above. So if you want one, get one!
 
Eh never cared for plasma. I've never seen black on a plasma that wasn't a dithered glittery mess of grey-green blotch with no two pixels in a swatch of black being the same shade.

Currently using a Panasonic AE4000 for my 1080p gaming/movie needs. AE7000 probably next.

Since going front projection, walking down the TV isle at Best Buy & Co is just "meh /shrug".

To each his own. For a dedicated viewing room, a projector is great. In a living room setup, I'd take a flat panel over a projector any day of the week.

And I normally have the opposite reaction. When I go to the theaters (which is RARE), I'm like "meh, I have better PQ at home." Quality over quantity for me. 😉

I agree. I get seriously annoyed at the amount of flicker you see at theaters, not to mention stuff like dust and so forth. 30 FPS is noticeably smoother than 24.
 
Eh can't really tell w/ the 240hz motion flow on my sony led lcd. damn images just pop out when i just got it. i was like, wtf is this shit. then i got used to it.

Same here. I'm running a HP MD5880n and the picture still looks great. I'll replace it once this bulb dies in a year or two but I won't settle for anything smaller.
 
Every year I go to Best Buy to see if there is anything that can replace my Pioneer Kuro, and so far there is nothing that matches its smooth motion, realistic image quality, and blacks. Last year, I even brought home a top of the line Sony LCD model to do side-by-side comparison (think it was 52HX900), and it went right back to the store. It seems I'll be using the Kuro until a new display technology comes out like OLED.
 
-Had an old Plasma, loved it until it started having problems (common old Samsung problems).

-Then I got a nice huge Sharp LED. Was not happy. Very uneven backlighting and motion blur was terrible. Sharp, to their credit, reimbursed me completely after a year of owning the TV.

-Spent an extra couple hundred bucks and bought a Panasonic VT30. Very very happy with it, no issues what so ever.

-Old Plasma is now in the spare room. Did some picture adjustments (what little there is available on this model) and it still looks pretty damn good for a 6 year old 720p set.

Screw LED.

Reviews of the Sharp Elites are positive yet cant justify the price premium on them over a good plasma.

Kuro owners can pretty much stand pat for a while still.
 
I have one of each (Plasma, DLP, LCD)

love the DLP for the size/cost ratio
love the Plasma for the picture quality
love the LCD cause it's small enough to hang above my closet in front of the bed
