Short version: Can I use this instead of the dvi cable for my u2311h monitor?

Long version: Can't get image when I use the minidp-to-dp adapter + regular dp cable. And the fan stays at 100% speed until the system is shut off... Dvi ports work fine though.

That's no different than your adapter + cable setup; mini-DP is just a different mechanical configuration of the DP pins. If the former setup doesn't work, a single cable very likely won't work either.
