yes computer people, you may help me decide on a PS

I believe the one I have now doesn't have enough juice. I won't say its capacity so as not to taint your recommendations. Here's what we will power:

Athlon 64 3000
stock HSF
ATI x800 Pro
MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R
2x 512MB PC3200 RAM
Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS
2x WD Raptor 74 GB RAID-0
1x Maxtor 300 GB
floppy drive
5 80mm case fans (1 in HD bay)
MS FF2 joystick

Antec is preferred because I have used them for years but I'm open to other suggestions.

Whats yoru budget? You overclocking at all?

You could probably do well with any 400+ watt power supply made by a quality manufacturer. As long as it has 22 or more amps on the 12v rail, you should be fine. You could probably do with less, but you might as well leave room to upgrade. 🙂

One more question: do you want a modular power supply? If not, then I'd recomend an OCZ Powerstream 420w. Its a very nice power supply (I can testify to that, I've got one) and it can easily handle that computer, even if you upgrade it. I believe you can get one for about $90.

my problem is that BF2 has been locking up lately. after playing for a while (sometimes minutes, sometimes hours), it locks up hard... screen goes black or blue, screeching sound from speakers, must restart machine. I have tested memory with Prime 95, tortured my video card with 3dmark 05, measured temps on everything, and taken the sound card out to isolate the problem.

tonight I added 2 more case fans to see if extra cooling would help. the lockups happen FASTER now, seconds after entering a game. my diagnosis is that my Antec True power 430 is dying. I just ordered an Antec TP2 550W from the 'egg, I hope that fixes things.

Since he was willing to spend so much money, I thought he might as well get a very nice power supply. And I dont' see how you can not recomend the OCZ and then recomend the SeaSOnic 430w. The OCZ is cheaper and more powerful.

Topower is a budget PSU manufacture; OCZ is the most expensive Topower PSU you'll ever see.

If you don't have 2 GB ram, that may be a problem, depending on what resolution you play on. As far as a PSU, stay away from Xclio, and buy yourself an enermax, or a fortron. Shoot for 480w +.

2GB of ram won't be the problem with BF2; it'll cause the game to run slow but not crash. I doubt your PSU is causing BF2 to have all those problems, but you never know, BF2 is incredibly buggy.

Operandi: everything I've ever read has said the OCZ Powerstream uses very high quality components. If it didn't, why would OCZ slap a 5 year warranty on it? Also, the 420w Powerstream has better specs and is cheaper than the Enermax 430w, so why get the Enermax over it?

I think topower makes the Powerstream too, but I know it has quality parts. The modstream, on the other hand, isn't built with near the same quality, so it is rather likely he got them confused.

Topower makes them all, the OCZ's represent the best of what Topower makes but they are all built to the same standard. They do offer lots of power but in terms of design and quality a Seasonic or Forton would be a better choice in my opinion.

The 5 year warranty is great though.

My Antec True power 430 is dying as well and I was faced with similar decision. I chose to go with Xclio 450w. Couldn't beat the $53 price and free mousepad. 🙂 Hopefully Xclio will be decent. Reviews seem favorable with ultra tight rails.
