Ok, so I bought a wonderful 80 gig western digital hard drive @ a computer show for $78... looked perfect in the package... but when I was leaving, I opened it up and noticed by the power plug the plastic was broken... that's ok though, everything else was fine on the drive, all the seals were still there, everything looks good, still has a warranty...

get it home, plug it in, hey, I'll be damned, it works. Well not anymore. Went to ran diagnostics on it for the hell of it, and it wouldn't complete the test, then it wouldn't finish writing zeros to the drive, and now it just wont show up in the bios...

I'm worried western digital wont accept it (there's nothing else wrong with it but the little piece of plastic that's broken off underneath the 4 power pins..)

So, now I'm thinking that it wont be accepted for RMA, or it wont even be under warranty. :(

And, to make matters worse, I can't even check the status, since westerndigital.com is down!

Somebody write sucker on my forehead, because I'm a pretty damn big idiot :(

Update!

Well, the drive isn't under warranty (go figure)... but it is working at the moment and so far it's passed the diagnostics where as it wouldn't before... (don't know why)

I'm going to see where I can get with it, and I'll probably use it, as it is a fairly decent drive... just has some minor kinks I might have to fix.

I don't think you are a moron, but you should be very leery about computer shows, they kinda remind me of gypsies.
Going to town to town sell their products and leave, and if you bought a defective product, you are pretty much SOL.

I wouldn't have paid more than $40 (after some coupon/rebate/PM magic) for an 80GB HD.

why wouldnt WD accept it.. usually HDD's have a 2-3 yr warranty no matter what. Id go back to the Wd site and fill out an RMA form or call technical service on monday. they should help you out, no Q's asked

I RMAed a WD last week. On their website there is a long list of things that they specifically state void the warranty such as bent pins, etc. They will not take it back no questions asked.

Also there is no guarantee that it's under warranty. If it's refurb or stolen you can forget it.

I will give you $50 + $5 shipping for the next 80 GB drive you get. I will even give ya an extra $3 if it is 7200 RPM :)

Computer shows give me about the same price that I can get online sometimes, maybe 5% more or so but I get the satisfaction of getting it NOW. Also, I always want a reciept with a number and address for every purchase...

Yeah, I was wondering how many people from anandtech were there but I didn't bother to ask anybody because I'd feel stupid if they said they'd never heard of it hahaha :)

As soon as you noticed the cracked piece, I would have returned to the vendor and had them exchange the drive. Thankfully, you have it working, though.

well I just hope if it does totally die western digital will take it back... as the little plastic piece has nothing to do with the drive (and it didn't affect the power pins either, as all were securely fastened and all the electronics stuff underneath looked just fine... (so did the case)

I bet if you did a survey and everyone answered honestly, more people than you think have had something similar happen to them. It doesn't make you a moron or a sucker. It just means you're human.
