I was in yellowstone last week and a park ranger told us that a camper in the previous week bought some bear spray (after the bear attack) and sprayed it around the campsite to keep bears away - like you would with DEET spray...

 D:

Good, now you know, it nothing to be embarrassed about... we learn from our mistakes.

Is bear spray specifically formulated? I'd thought it was basically just pepper spray. More concentrated than normal, perhaps?

My wife keeps a can of bear mace next to the bed. I'm terrified I'm gonna get sprayed by it when I come back from taking a piss in the middle of the night.

Youtube it. Funny as hell when guys ask to be sprayed. Bought a can for the wife, tested it in the back yard, waited until the fog dissipated, thought I was good to go and walked through the area. Sh*t. I do NOT want a face of that.

I have always wondered if it would be good when added to food. 5 million Scoville hot sauce anyone?

Carry it with you and replace it when you return to bed. Problem solved.

I was hiking with the wife in the Grand Tetons, and she insisted on carrying the bear spray cannister. At one point, we stopped and stood in the middle of the trail for a few minutes, not knowing that 25' away from us there was a black bear hiding in some shrubs. After a few moments, the pressure became too much for him, and he bolted... as fast as possible away from us.

My wife, in the panic of the moment, fumbled around with the cannister and sprayed her hand.

I carry the bear spray now.

one spritz and that pot of chili will be too hot to consume lol

I've cooked with powdered Bhut Jolokia peppers before, which are around 1MM Scoville units. You can use a fair amount in something like chili if you're used to spicy food. Easily more than 5x a spritz-worth.

Doesn't S&W have a snub-nozed .50 magnum revolver that it markets to hikers as bear protection?

50 percent of people that shoot the bear get mauled. 20 percent of the people with bear spray get mauled.

Edit: If that bear can get out of my t.v. to eat me then so be it.

Seems like most of the survival kit type guns are 357 mag, of course there are a lot of people who say to take nothing smaller than 44mag....

Still, if it were me, I'd carry a 357 with 6 inch barrel. Bullet can get to full muzzle velocity when fired, should have plenty of energy to penetrate even the thickest bear skull. Also, 357 is easy enough to shoot, than you can fire 4 or 5 times in semi-rapid succession quickly, and still hit your target ... 44's tend to have a bit more kick to them, so generally, you'll need to fire slower, or miss your mark ...

That's why my .44 Magnum has an 8" barrel. It is pretty easy to shoot and it is accurate as hell. Only drawback is that it is heavy.
