When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please
send the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".
Please report problems to xorg@freedesktop.org.

I'M PRETTY NEW TO ALL THIS SO ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS!

What is your X's configuration file?

The important lines in that log are lines that begin with (EE).. that indicates a 'error' and that will shutdown your X server. Sometimes (WW) warnings are important, but they won't cause your X server to fail.

So your using Yellow Dog.. This is a PowerPC machine? What video card are you using? A Radeon 7400 or something?

Try posting your X's configuration file. You can leave out the lines that have # before it, those are comments and aren't important.

yes it's a powerpc G3 the old imac (colored one)
it has an ati something...i want to say rage 140? something? i can't quite remember i'll post the exact model number tomorrow when i can check the computer.
would the config file be the /etc/X11/XF86Config ?:

I googled around a bit. Not to familar with your card and computer, but I've found some XF86Config files that may work.

Basicly the differences between those and yours is that they are using a different driver for their card. Your using the FBdev driver, which is that the software accesses the memory on the card directly (called framebuffer) and draws everything there.. Not the best thing to use, but it usually works. TRy the ATI driver. (the non-propriatory one, should be included by default)

Make this part:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
#Option "ShadowFB" "true"
#Option "fbdev" "/dev/fb0"
Driver "fbdev"
#BusID "0:0:0"
EndSection

Look like this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "ati"
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection

Or alternatively, if that doesn't work:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "ati"
# Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection

Carefull editing files. Make a backup of your XF86Config (like to your home directory as xf86config.backup) file before editing it so that you can undo the changes you make by copying it back over itself.

Also you can try Ubuntu's Live cdrom aviable at http://ubuntu.hands.com/releases/kubuntu/5.10/

It's based on their install cdrom stuff and it will try to autodetect and setup your video card automaticly. It uses a newer version of X based from the X.org project, but it's basicly the same as what you use with XFree86. The configuration file for that would be located in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. You can see what settings it setups there and then try to write the changes to your yellowdog install and see if it works there.

Or maybe you can just use the powerpc version of Ubuntu instead..

Although on these older machines you'd probably want to use a lightweight environment like Fluxbox or XFCE to get it a bit faster and they require much less memory to run well. Ubuntu use Gnome by default and it's pretty bloated. I am not sure about Yellowdog, but the same basic ideas apply.

neither of those configurations worked.

hopefully i cut those logs down appropriately. Thanks for all your help.

Hrmmm...

Try:

Try this command first:
modprobe radeonfb

Then try this in your config:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "rt128"
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection

or

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "rt128"
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection

Or alternatively, if that doesn't work:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "r128"
# Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection

Or just try:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "vesa"
# Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection

That's about it for ideas for me.

Otherwise try Yellowdog's mailing lists or their IRC channels. Alternatively you can buy a box set from Yellowdog and get professional support that way. They'd know much better then me about these older G3 powerpc stuff.. (I've never owned one)

You can try Ubuntu.. They have very good PowerPC support and it should autodetect your stuff well, plus they have very nice forums and irc channels for help. Also if your using a older version of yellowdog then you realy realy want to try out the very latest version they have released. Linux has gotten much better then it used to be for autodetecting this sort of stuff.

Thanks for all you help.

I tried kubuntu and ubuntu live, with no luck. I'm think that there is either something wacky with the computer or i downloaded bad isos I ordered a ubuntu cd and am going to try and install that.
