What were the years/films in the past that you felt that the Academy Award winner choices were just plain... off?

A year that comes to mind for me is 1994:

Nominees:
Forrest Gump
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Pulp Fiction
Quiz Show
The Shawshank Redemption

Winner:
Forrest Gump

I like Forrest Gump, but seriously: how did that film trump Pulp Fiction?

Sound off, peeps.

Forrest Gump was revolutionary at the time. Pulp Fiction is a cult hit but.... the winner should have been the Shawshank Redemption. That's still an awesome and epic movie.

I would have picked Shawshank as the winner.

The integration of Forrest into so many old film clips almost seamlessly, Lt Dan with no legs...and it was just a good story overall...Pulp Fiction was good and a classic but the story wasn't up to the artsy types tastes...I agree though that Shawshank Redemption should have been the winner

Shawshank was the best.

Forrest Gump got the win cuz Tom Hanks plays ball with the Hollywood bigshots and Quentin Tarantino tells them to eat shit.

I actively disliked Forrest Gump. I would have given the nod to Pulp Fiction rather easily, despite the fact that I also liked Shawshank.

2002 for me. Gangs of New York should have won Best Picture over Chicago. Also, Daniel Day-Lewis should have won Best Actor over Adrien Brody.

2002:
Chicago - won
Gangs of New York
The Hours
LoTR: Two Towers
Pianist

The fu*k?

2003:
LotR: Return of the King - won
Lost in Translation
Master & Commander
Mystic River
Seabiscuit

LoTR was amazing, but Lost in Translation was just totally something else. I remember talk about how they blew off the first two LoTR movies, so this was a "series acknowledgement".

2005:
Crash - won

Munich was better. No interest in Crash.

Shawshank Redemption should have beaten Forest Gump. I'd put Pulp Fiction in 3rd behind those two. I hate to say "over-rated" - but Pulp Fiction is more of a cult hit; not a general hit.

And, how in hell didn't Saving Private Ryan win?

Since 1990 I would say the big errors were:

1996- The English Patient
over Fargo, Jerry Maguire, Shine, and Secrets & Lies
1998- Shakespeare in Love
over Elizabeth, Life is Beautiful, The Thin Red Line, and Saving Private Ryan
2004- Million Dollar Baby
over The Aviator, Finding Neverland, Ray, and Sideways
2009- The Hurt Locker
over too many to list

Though in many cases there would be more except many movies are shunned for nominations because of their genre or general appeal.

Forest Gump was, and still is, an "epic". Pulp Fiction is great, but I wouldn't consider it "Best Picture" material that jives with the Oscars' definition of best picture.

Personal piss off is 1999. I finally saw American Beauty recently, and have to say it was damn good... I'm just pissed that Magnolia didn't even get a nod, while the Green Mile and Sixth Sense did.

Crash was awesome. I've tried watching lost in translation 3 times and I still hate it.
