Yeah, that's pretty much my take on gaming consoles... ;)

After getting an Xbox, I hardly ever use my PC for anything besides web browsing anymore.

You just can't beat being able to sit back on the couch, stretch your legs out, and play games on a big screen HDTV with the dolby digital surround sound cranking. Right now, I think consoles have the edge in price, performance, and functionality.

I can use my console for a juke box, cdplayer, dvd player, game machine, ect.

I never thought I'd be a console convert. But, I'm afraid I am. 😱

then again the last video game i played was castlevania:symphony of the night

Basically, they are saying that a console is a half ass computer. Which, in theory is true. Something like an Xbox has a CPU, a hard drive, a video card, a network card, a cdrom, RAM, ect. But it's only got a fraction of the functionality of a computer, which again, is true.

But how many computers can you buy for $150 that will provide you with 2-3 years of playing enjoyment with often time superior graphics and game play?

Not many.

And then you throw in the intangibles that I mentioned below - comfort, bigger screens to play it on, more enveloping sound, ect.

It's all in what you want out of the specific device.

I used to be anti-console, then I bought a Dreamcast and a boatload of handhelds and I realized the A-1 reason I think consoles are so wonderful is this:

When I buy a game, I know with 100% certainty that it will play the first time I try it without having to waste an hour fiddling with settings and drivers and mappings and so much other crap.

Doubly better with handhelds - I can lay in bed and play.

if you use emulated games, it seems like you should be able to get a setup with your computer that allows for the same experience for less than 200 bucks. hook your computer up to the tv, buy some controllers that interface with your computer.

the only reason i can see to get a console is you don't want to rely on using emulated games and/or you're too lazy to figure out how to do the above.

The more I read Penny Arcade, the less intelligence I think the author has. There are obvious benefits to consoles which if you can't see, then you are blind, stupid, or both 🙂

The more you read Penny Arcade, the more I think you don't understand satire.

But that involves a whole bunch of work and fiddling around compared to 1. Buy console. 2. Plug it in. 3. Put Game in. 4. Play.

Satire is only funny if it's relevant and accurate. Penny Arcade isn't that funny because it is so often off the mark. It may be satire, but it's not good satire.

Emulated games? Maybe for Genesis and SNES, and maybe a few N64 + PS1 games. But even then they are old, buggy, lacking in controller support, and not designed to take advantage of the latest and greatest in home theatre equipment.

If this is what you are talking about, then you aren't allowed to play any game for the PC that came out after 1998. Because that's how old the content for the ROMS is.

Besides, looking for ROMs is a pain in the ass and completely defeats the purpose of having a console.

Oh, ho, ho, irony! Oh, no, no, we don't get that here. See, uh, people ski topless here while smoking dope, so irony's not really a, a high priority. We haven't had any irony here since about, uh, '83, when I was the only practitioner of it. And I stopped because I was getting tired of being stared at.

Yes but the poster was talking about "gaming consoles", which makes your point worthless. Thanks for the link though.

It's basically a PC with a new name and jacked up price.

That device is a joke. It seems like DIVX...for consoles. And we know how well that went over.

There is basically very little information on the link, so I am skeptical as well.
