Nah, it's hard to F up a head unit as long as you buy the right wiring harness adapters. I've found it's getting more expensive, but not necessarily more difficult, on newer cars. Had to buy a $80 CAN bus adapter for our Passat. My Supra used a $11 passive harness adapter. Same head unit in both.

Now, whether or not I need to be driving around an 18 year old car with in-dash GPS is another story :) Toyota put a Double-DIN hole in it for a reason, though, they just didn't know it yet.

I had to customize my dash to accommodate a double din GPS/mp3. Check out the fabrication section at mp3car.com. Awesome stuff there.

I did it on my old bug and my 05 car. I wouldn't do it on all these new cars that have everything integrated. Seems it'd be practically impossible for the regular joe to do it on these new cars.

They make specific kits for late model cars but they can get pricey, the one for my GM costs $170 but makes lets you keep most of the DIC functions..

yeah, the newer cars diagnostic system communicates with the radio. Also, some cars use the speakers for things like the "door ajar" chime. My car radio flashes "dead hooker in trunk" when I forget to dump the body. So, I guess some times, it is a convenient feature.
