My Capital One card disappeared. It wasn't lost outside the house nor was it stolen. I had it out to pay for pizza and I have no idea where it disappeared to (Pizza guy didn't even ask to see the card so he didn't take it)

Anyways, I call to cancel my card few days later because I was unable to find the card and theres a pending charge on my account for $19.99 or $19.95. The CSR told me to call back in a few days to see if that charge disappeared or if it finally posted.

Called back today and they said it's a charge from MSN. I told her I've never used MSN service before and she told me to call MSN first. So to humor them, I call up MSN and of course, they ask me for the card # (old card #) which I don't have on me. Then the MSN CSR tells me they've had a rash of fraudulent accounts created in the last 3 weeks because they do not require any information other than a credit card to create an account.

Just a PSA.

One thing I do which I dunno if it's smart or dumb is that I request a new CC/Debit card every 6 months or so.

You can request a new card all you want, but they send one with the same number. They did for me anyways when my magnetic stripe wore out.
I think the lesson here is to not lose your card.
If someone does steal your number, you're not liable over $50 and many CC banks will not worry about that either, so you have nothing to worry about.

Yeah, that's it. Find a credit card and go create an MSN acount. Screw the liquor store, cartons of cigarettes and the fine meats section at the supermarket.

Please provide an explanation why you think this. I'm curious. It decreases the chances that someone can steal a working cc # online.

Well the CSR told me that thieves tend to try a small "purchase" first with a stolen cc to determine if it's a working # or not.

Pretty much every CC company I've seen offers one time use numbers for online purchases. You can generate an infinite number of CC's to use online with it.

because every time you get a new credit card number, it creates a new entry on your credit report. It also makes creditors wonder if you are careless or just plain stupid.

I've had several credit cards and had them all for years and years, and NEVER had any problem with fraud.

Umm...that's b/c you requested a new card to replace your current one.....If it is lost or stolen, they will give you a new number.

Wow really? Could you name which ones because all of mine don't (as far as I know)

Are you sure about that because I never see multiple entries on my credit report. Nor do I see anything about receiving a new card. The CC companies told me that I still have the same account number which is what is reported to the cc companies but my credit card # changes with the new card.

Yeah, that's 'cause you have capital one, the credit card company for people with no credit. Discover Card, Citi Bank, AMEX all offer one time use credit card # service.

Well, as someone already explained, it will start creating more and more entries on your credit report, and it will eventually lead to a split file. Once you have one of those it is a very large pain to correct, and it can easily prevent you from getting credit if the wrong "portion" is pulled.

Secondly, on 99% of cards you are limited to 50 dollars in exposure to fraud. Over that and you don't have to pay. To me, that minute amount of exposure is not worth constantly changing card numbers. I have many things setup to auto-bill and the like, and/or memorized card numbers for when I need to do certain things.

But how sure are you about the multiple entries? On my CC report (for example) I only have a single entry for American Express even though I've had multiple cards from them over the years.
