Yay, Phoenix/Firebird 0.6 out!

Very stable. Still bugs to sort out but Firebird gets about 99% of my browsing time. Love all the cool extensions & themes.

Yes, its a great build, still have a few major bugs to fix before I recommend it to friends, but overall very nice, and its a long time coming too! 🙂

Cool. I'll give it a try. The known issues seem to be pretty noticeable issues though:

-Menus, and folders on the bookmark toolbar do not always collapse correctly for Mozilla Firebird users on Windows.
-The "Don't ask at startup" checkbox in the Profile Manager is not working.
-"Use this theme" checkbox in theme install doesn't function properly and you may have to switch themes by going to Tools > Options > Themes. Also, some themes will not completely switch without a restart.
-Form auto-complete is still an unstable feature and may lead to crashes.
-Disabling of form auto-completion is not working.
-Firebird on Mac OS X is new and still very rough around the edges. Expect platform inconsistencies.

Seems like there are still a few major issues hanging on, but I'll have to give it a try.
Doubtlessly Opera will remain by usual broswer tho.

awesome build. I tried 0.3 (few hours), 0.4 (half a day), 0.5 (2 to 3 days)
this 0.6 I'm definitely gonna be my main browser for sure. Can't recommend it quite yet to average joes though.

was anyone else having problems with firebird rendering the forums here?
On mine, the colors for each topic didn't alternate and everything seemed really bright.

But then all of a sudden things went back to normal...

Probably because you hadn't logged in. 🙂 Try logging out. It'll make things look really bright and weird.

PLEASE NOTE: You should create a new profile for Mozilla Firebird 0.6. To create a new profile, start Mozilla Firebird by running MozillaFirebird.exe -p and click on the "Create Profile" button. If you don't want to delete your old profile and are willing to incur the risk of new bugs, you should at least delete your profile's downloads.rdf file.

You must also delete your old Mozilla Firebird directory rather than just overwriting the files there. Not doing so WILL result in problems and you should not file any bugs on Mozilla Firebird unless you've first done a clean install and tested on a new profile. As Mozilla Firebird stabilizes more this will not be necessary but until then these steps are absolutely necessary.

I've been using .6 for 24hrs now and I love it. The basic browser pluse Tab Bar Extensions gives me what I want in a browser: speed, usability and stability. That's 3 out of three, some thing that my current browser (Opera 7.11) no longer has. I've been using Opera 99.9% of the time since Opera 4.x and they really took a wrong turn with 7.xx. It's no faster than IE and not particularly stable either. I'm fairly sure Firebird .6 will take over as my default browser.

When Pheonix .1 came out I was so excited I almost peed myself. Somebody actually designed a browser that's just a browser, it doen't have a bucnh of extra crap tacked onto it. It just renders html very quickly. What an insane concept! Of course .1 was pretty buggy but I've been checking in as Mozilla's progressed through the milestones and was very impressed with the .5 builds. I've been using some of the .6 nightlies (especially since Opera 7.x was released) and have been even happier with them. This .6 build is a nice improvement over the previous milestone build and I really think I'm going to stick with it. I just hope Mozilla keeps it lean and mean as they get nearer to the 1.x release. It seems like software developers just can't resist adding crap to their projects as they progress. That's exactly what Pheonix/Firebird doesn't need.

quick tweak to load pages faster ..

add this to the user.js file.

// This one makes a huge difference. Last value in milliseconds (default is 250)
user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 0);

Whoo! Decided to give Firebird a try and I've gotta say I'm mighty impressed, so impressed in fact I've removed Opera for the time being.

Quick question: why does the Anandtech Quick Reply box appear at the bottom of each thread like it does in Opera/IE?? 😕

Edit: The quick reply wasn't there because I wasn't logged in because it was a fresh install 😱

That must be it, because everything went back to fine as soon as I logged in to post a complaint here... good call.

Now that I am actually starting to use firebird full-time over mozilla 1.4b, has anyone tried thunderbird for mail? I currently use mozilla mail, but since I don't have the browser open all the time anymore, I am wondering how tunderbird compares.

Pipelining is an experimental feature, designed to improve page-load performance, that is unfortunately not well supported by some web servers and proxies. .. experimental.

Is there a way to use the tab plugin but selectively open a link in a new window (instead of a tab)?

do you use mouse gestures? I have one gesture for open in new tab (Up) and one for open in new window (Down).

He's answering the question by just copying and pasting what the website says. Does he really need to paraphrase it?
