Yay! My angelfish just spawned!

A few months ago I started with 6 tiny angelfish (3 marble and 3 white) along with some neons and a gold dojo. They were all Petsmart fish, so there were some losses. I'm down to 2 each of the angels, 3 neons, and the dojo.

Tank decorated with plastic plants, silk plants, and two large pieces of driftwood. All in a 50 gallon tank with a built in trickle filter. 35% weekly water changes with tap water and AmQuel. I don't even know the pH of the tap water, let alone the rest of the measurements.

This was an ornamental tank so I didn't do much other than keep the temp at 79* and do my water changes. Algae removal on the front glass every change, but nothing on the rest. The glass fills up pretty quick since I don't clean the rest off, or have any serious filtration. Bio balls and a thin fiber mechanical filter. That's it. The water is full of tannins from the wood, so I suspect the pH is staying pretty low.

Anyway, I watched 2 of them lay eggs tonight. I tried to take pictures, but tonight was supposed to be a water change and so the glass is pretty covered with algae. Not planning on cleaning it now until a few days after the eggs hatch. I'll switch to daily one gallon water changes until then too.

My 2 year old is sooo excited (as am I!) I've bred fish before, but never on accident like this. It's pretty wild. 🙂

cool, cichlids are fairly good parents, but you might want to put the fry into a nursery tank if you really want them to live or just see how it goes

Thanks. This will be my first community spawning, so I'm going to leave 'em in and see. I've always separated angels and fry (and discus and fry, etc...) but I'd like to see how they fare in this tank.

Congratulations on your little bundle of fry (or soon to be fry).

I miss my Angels very much. They (I had 5) got to be as big as my palm. Actually, large as my hand counting their fins.

Sounds good. 🙂

You should put some plants in there and some algae eaters.

I prefer livebearers (mollies and platies).

Yep.

That's ok though. Most angelfish screw up the first spawning. We'll see how long it takes them to try again. 🙂

As long as they don't spawn Orcs or Goblins, you should be okay.
