I painfully discovered it last year around this time and I thought I should share it with atot. I only take the meds when ever it acts up (usually when I'm stressed) and I was reminded of it today when I tried to get my 'HTPC' working which has failed for probably the 50th time. All the 'free software' out there has been nothing but a head ache. FFDSHOW, DSCALER, VLC you name it, it just didn't work with my HTPC. Now I'm trying to emulate what I was doing on my HTPC on my desktop and I'm not getting anywhere. Or when I'm stressed out in class/school/what ever. It's been a 'fun' experience..

No. It'd be nice though if they stuck a camera down my throat and took pictures of the ucler or something..

You can always ask them to do an EGD(aka:esophagogastroduodenoscopy)

how do you know it's an ulcer? i have acid reflux and the acid in my stomach builds up when i get stressed. I usually just take Zantac 150mg for a week and it'll go away.

Acid reflux is when the acid comes up into your throat and burns it, right?

acid reflux is when acid rises up and causes heart burn i think. but it doesn't go all the way up to the throat. who diagnosed you with an ulcer?

The usual method to confirm an ulcer is through the upper endoscopy procedure.

I think Nexium (the purple pill) is supposed to help with heartburn AND the ulcers that can result.

Antibiotics. Ulcers are caused by a bacteria; you kill it, ulcer goes away.

not always...yes, some ulcers are caused by helicobacter pylori and can be treated with antibiotics. this is not always the case though.

how did they know it was an ulcer without doing the EGD?

you should definitely see your gastroenterologist

btw, most GI doctors will tell you that ulcers caused by stress is a myth

get the EGD done as DeathBUA mentioned. they'll make a visual inspection of the ulcers, and take biopses. hopefully the pathology report will determine whether it's bacteria like esun mentioned, or if it's something else. could also be caused by cancer, which the pathology report should show.

and like zanieladie pointed out, you'll most likely get nexium, protonix, aciphex, or some other proton pump inhibitor that will decrease your acid production

good luck

Qft.

I don't have acid reflux disease because I don't get heartburn, I haven't had heart burn in years... I can eat what ever I want (I like spicy things) and I don't get heart burn or anything of the sort, my stomach doesn't hurt when I eat certain foods or drink certain things.. The only time it begins to hurt is literally when I'm under stress, I take some protonix and usually the pain goes away in about an hour or so, sometimes it only goes away when I lay on my back (assumes ucler is in front of stomach).

sounds like you're assuming you have an ulcer -- a physician could prescribe medications to treat your ulcer.

here's a link to the mayo clinic's site with more information about ulcers
http://www.mayoclinic.org/peptic-ulcers/index.html

you probably already know this, but smoking and drinking alcohol can irritate the stomach lining, so cigarettes and alcohol should be avoided. also, NSAIDS (e.g. aspirin, motrin, ibuprofen) can irritate the stomach lining too, so those should be avoided

hth

Don't take any of that stuff anyways... Doctor told me I had an ucler, it was significantly worse a year ago, when the pain first arrived I thought I was going to die, I had the pain for over three hours, completely agonizing, no matter how I sat or drink etc. it was excruciatingly painful. Ever since then, when ever I get really stressed out the pain returns magically.

Studies show that Republicans are double-digit percentage points happier in general than Democrats.....regardless of who is in political power. Maybe it's time to reassess your political stances.

good to hear you don't smoke or drink.

just out of curiousity, did your doctor have you take tests to determine if the H. pylori bacteria was involved with your ulcer and if he/she prescribed meds to treat it (as well as other meds to treat your ulcer)?

if not, you should probably follow up with your doctor to get those tests done
