$5k limit, about to graduate, going to Europe in the summer for 5 weeks..and have about 12k in loans once it's all said and done. I see nothing but good things in this situation.

What do you think?

Congradulations! There is nothing better than getting into credit card debt at a young age. Colleges really prepare kids well.

That may be the case, buy unfortunately for us, credit is the pinnacle of being able to own a nice car and a nice home on an average salary. It doesn't help to worry about credit when you need it, so you'd be smart to start when you can.

haha, you are so screwed. I have some credit card debt, but its easily managable with my pay. I will have that and a good portion of my student loans killed off by this time next year.

What i'm trying to say is they are bad news if you are not responsible. If I had 12k in debt I wouldn't be wanting to add more to the total.

Keyword responsible.
I'm sure debit cards and cash are bad for you if you are irresponsible.
Infact everything is bad for you if you are irresponsible. Drugs, having fun, eating, etc.

Not if you know how to use them. I've never paid a cent in interest, and get 5% cash back on gas, supermarkets, and drugstores, 1% everything else :D

As long as you treat it as only spending money you have, it's great.

You did a pretty bad job....

"Credit cards are bad news overall."

... really doesn't capture the whole "if you are not responsible and already have 12k of debt" part.

Anyway, the 12k in debt is student loans. If you expect a person to not get a credit card for nearly a decade until the student loans are paid, they're screwed as far as credit goes.

0% on purchases for 12 months.

I'm going to be moving back home (..:(..) afterward with a temp job that I worked at last summer while I look for a real career.

Read the fine print before these jackasses jack your money...

Look for stuff like "We reserve the right to raise your rate any time you miss a payment to us on this account, any other account you have wih us, or any account you have with a creditor."

Use a credit card, but spend the money as if it were a debit card. Meaning, don't spend more than you ALREADY have in savings to pay it off. If you ring up a $1000 CC bill and expect the next paycheck to cover it, you're setting yourself up for trouble. If that paycheck, for one reason or another, doesn't show up, that 0% interest is now 20% interest.

And pay in full every month. It's such a simple concept, yet people insist on paying more in the long haul by making minimum payments.

Honestly, I don't see how so many people manage to get into trouble with credit cards.
