Yay, I got my domain today. Now what?

Hmm, I think Im in over my head. I got my domain registered today ( finally! ). Signed up for hosing with AddAction, but now what do I do? Im so lost I suck.

All I want to do right now is set up the index page, simple enough? But noo, I have no clue where it is supposed to go on my host. I tried putting it in various directories but I never get the index page when I go to my site.

speg.com ( I think I have to use the IP until the nameservers update themselves or something? <-- That was also confusing and I probally messed that up to.

So what do I do to get this simple index up?

1. Make sure your nameservers are set up correctly at the registrar
2. the file, index.html, should go in the public_html directory

If all you want to do is get a simple "hello" page up till you design the site, just create one real quick using some HTML editor like Hotdog pro, Coffee Cup, Frontpage, whatever you got laying around. It doesn't have to be fancy, just something saying you are on the web and are working on a design soon. You can use whatever simple template they give you in the proggy.

Then, upload that index.html file into the public_html directory of your website. Test it out, and Walla! You are on the net. Then get to figuring out what you want to do with the site. What theme, content, layout (php, perl, Css, etc). Have fun with it and learn as you go.

BTW, your dns seems to be working now.

Hmm, I did the nameservers thing. But that takes 24-78 hours to update right? But I can still get to the site throught the IP address right? I placed the index.html file in the public_html folder, but all I get when i go here is some "hey it worked" thingy. :confused:

Yeah, it takes up to 48 hours or so for all the root DNS servers to update, but I have found that it sometimes takes alot less than that.


As for it working by going to the ip, a qualified yes. If addaction is anything like ripplehost, the server you are on is hosting alot more sites than just your own. You might need to try the ip and your user name (ie http://127.0.0.1/~username). That might put you in your directory. Once your Dns is working, the server will take care of all the re-directs to your site.

AHA! Check that out. Maybe I should read the instructions more thoughouly, or at all :) I dunno why I have to go to that url and not the IP one, but meh! At least it's working.

Nice...still trying to figure out if i wanna do with mine. I definately am not happy with the layout and color scheme of Foose.net. Ah well...maybe i will find some template monster template to work off of. ;)

Uh... yes you can. I got $15 for a year, which was the most expensive since I only bought it for a year. That's $7.50/6 months. If I'd bought for longer periods of time, I'd have a lower per-year price. $9.95/6months SUCKS!

I hate to say it but I used Snapnames to backorder it ( I couldn't risk losing it! ) So I payed $70 for the domain :\ The registar ended up being domaindiscount24 but I didn't have any choosing in that, as Snapnames just uses a netork of registars to watch your domain.

Now, tonights project, set up greymatter :\

until youve built a site, just put goatsecx as the entry/default page (index.htm)

D'oh you asked how many sites I run?

Between HigherHost, RippleHost and dathorn I'd say around 150 websites. 5 of them are mine.
