I've an Epson FS-1200ART film scanner. It's official software is only available in Japanese and wreaks havoc on my English Windows, but I located the English driver for FilmScan 200, a British version of this scanner. It seems to work fine. Even though this scanner requires you to load a negative into this special caddy(in other words, if you break the caddy, good bye film scanner), but I'm glad I can use it again.

Seems that pictures I scan from this scanner needs a lot of color and brightness correction. Color balance correction is actually extremely difficult. Is there a freeware or a reasonably priced (<$100) you can recommend for this?

Also, when I scan black and white films, it seems that scanning film as full color and converting them to grayscale yields better result than scanning them as black and white. Why?

Maybe you just need to profile your scanner to get the colors right. What kind of photography do you do?

Black and white stuff for class and color snapshots from parties, hiking and ya know the things you do with point and shoot.
