I've been looking at getting a new car at the end of the year and the Impreza is starting to really catch my eye. But I want to make sure I'm not getting tunnel vision with this and get stuck on one car, I have been looking at a lot of cars on edmunds.com but I wan't to get some more input on whats out there.

This is what I'm looking for in a car in no particular order...

* Good gas mileage. Doesn't have to be awesome, but I'm not driving around in something that gets 19MPG city.
* Comfy with good field of vision.
* Fun.
* Good handling and breaking. I was taught to avoid accidents, not lean on my horn and hope they move.
* MANUAL transmission. I'm sick of auto!
* Seats that are comfy enough for long trips but keep you planted on windy mountain roads (colorado).
* Safe and reliable.
* Under $30k.

Thanks in advance!

Update.

I think I have changed my idea of what kind of car I want. I was talking with my mother about how hard it was trying to find a good paint balling car, she asked me why I was looking at a car for just paintball when I would only use it for that maybe once every two to three months. I thought about it for a minute and decided it was a pretty dumb idea, she then went on to tell me that I'm young and I should get a ?fun car? while I can.

When you mother tells you to buy a sports car, you don't argue.

So with that in mind, two of my friends and I went out at looked at cars that fall under the ?fun? class that are still in my price range.

My list so far:

Mazda3 Hatchback.
Test drove: Yes

Pros:
*Don't hate the Style.
*Adjustable EVREY THING.
*Smooth clutch.
*Vision is acceptable.
*A good amount of pep.
*Still affordable even with the fancier trims.
*MPG city.
*Handling.

Cons:
*Not the fastest thing on my list.
*At times it feels like there are too many buttons, had a hard time finding things.
*If I ever wanted to replace the radio it looks like it would be a real chore.

Subaru Ipreza.
Test drove: Not yet

Pros:
*AWD w/manual.
*Trunk space.
*Good Vision.
*Known to last long.
*Roomy.
*Ground clearance.

Cons:
*WRX may be out of reach.
*Reviews show it's not as nimble as the Mazda3.

VW GTI Mk V.
Test drove: Not yet.

Pros:
*Love the style.
*INSANE low-end torque. (200 @ 1,800RPM)
*Clean and stylish interior.
*Very nice seats.
*Big windows give a nice FOV.
*Auto could be fun with the paddle shifters.

Cons:
*Heavy.
*Expensive.
*Not a fan of leather or plaid.
*Hood is a bit too high giving you a funky view.
*Auto looks fun but for $1,000+ I think I can live with a stick.

Chevy Cobalt SS Super charged
Test drove: Yes.

Pros:
*OMG SUPERCHARGED!!! 😛
*Good price Vs. Power.
*Like the body
*Pretty much comes fully loaded.

Cons:
*Not the best FOV and the fin blocking the rear doesn't help.
*Touchy clutch.
*Power kinda scared me, but I'm sure I just need to get used to it.
*Could be a high maintenance car.
*Cop bait.
*Don't feel safe while driving it, not a lot of room.
*Steering is so-so.
*Not a Day-to-day car.

Thats my list so far, more too come soon.

*Note: I know this is turning into more of a review thread than a "Help me buy a new car" but I think it may come in handy for thoes looking for a new car in the same class.

* Comfy with good field of vision.

* A good amount of pep, mainly for hauling stuff, but also for a bit of fun now and then. 😉

* Room enough to fit 4-5 Paintballers and their gear in it.

* Good handling and breaking. I was taught to avoid accidents, not lean on my horn and hope they move.

* Something that is more than an inch off the ground, the car will see dirt roads and I don't want to worry about scraping my oil pan on a rock.

* MANUAL transmission. I'm sick of auto!

* Seats that are comfy enough for long trips but keep you planted on windy mountain roads (colorado).

* Safe and reliable

* Under $30k

Subaru Forester XT should meet all those requirements, or the legacy GT wagon if you can find one in manual

Mazda 3 hatchback GT. Xenon lights, manual transmission, leather seats, navigation, and tons of other features can be had for under $24,000. You can skip the navigation and get the GT top of the line model for abour $21-22,000. The car is very fun to drive from customer reviews. As for off-roading, probably not so good. The car can haul around lots of stuff though. That would be my first choice. Second choice, Nissan Murano, maybe? It is upscale and is an SUV. Not great for off-roading but certainly better than the Mazda 3. Or, maybe a Jeep. The more options the better.

Well if you are putting those cars together (Mazda 3 and what not) then you HAVE to look at the new Honda Civic Si.

-Kevin

I would almost put civic > mazda 3 just because of resale/trade in value, seeing as both cars dont usually come down in price on the lot... they do come down quicker in camp mazda in terms of value within the first 3 years

Not a big Honda fan (sick of all the ricers around here that drive them) but it wouldn't hurt to take a look I guess.

The old Honda's are infamous for that. However the new one looks just sleek. I don't think there are many that would get it confused with a ricer car.

I would put the Civic Si above every car he has up there thus far. Above the Mazda is a no brainer. The Impreza is outclassed by the Si (Si is meant to counter WRX). Cobalt, well i personally dont like Chevy's. I dont feel that they are the best quality cars, but seeing as it is Supercharged im sure it would give the Honda a run for its money.

Resale value though, the honda hands down.

I forgot all about the G6. I'll ad it to my list.

Also, I'm not planing on buying untill late this year. I'm saving up for it and trying to bulid my credit. To tell the truth, I'm not 100% sure I can afford half the cars on my list.

Time will tell.

If your looking at the 3... look at the 6 if it's in your budget. They have good cash back incentives right now. My fiancee just got a Mazda 6 i sport... nice car Im kind of jealous.

I'll vouch for the Mazda 3s. Great car! I love mine! I just wish you could open the trunk with the key fob remote, and I also wish it had a real time MPG readout.

The Saab looks like a rebadged Impreza, I'll take a look but I doubt I will show much interest. The Impreza is starting to slide down my list one notch at a time.

The Mazda6 is on my list, just haven't had a good look at it yet (I have allot of foot work to do 😛 ). Also I'm waiting to see the new Mazda3 Speed, should be coming in the next few months.

Other cars that are on my list:

2007 Mini Cooper (150HP from 115)
Saturn Ion Redline
Mazda MX-5 (I know, I know. But it is in my price range 😀 )

I would cross Cobalt off the list for the time being. And the only Saturn thats worth buying is the SKy

Mazda RX8

These are your usual suspect. I suggest you test drive them all.

Sorry but after reading up on them, I don't think I will buy a Honda or Acura. The lowend on them are... Not very low end.

139 ft-lbs @ 6100RPM? No thanks.

And the RX-8 MPG sucks. I know I'm looking at sport cars but I'm going to have a fun time paying for the car as is, I don't want to be filling up the tank every week.
