Ok 1. What is the exact definition of "getting toned" and why would one need to get "toned"?
2. Couldn't you just work out and then there wouldn't be a need to get toned?
3. How does one get toned and how does the workout differ from a workout where your not getting toned?

Hmm IIRC that muscle "tone" refers to the composition of muscle and not the size. A more "toned" muscle would have a lower amount of lipids (fats) stored in and around it.

Going by that, the best way to "tone" muscle is to do purely aerobic exerise, biking, running, walking, etc. Working out as in lifting wieghts properly will increase muscle size, but depending on diet not necessarily muscle tone.

Muscle tone in and of itself isn't too important, however the aerobic excercise needed to get good muscle tone also happens to be very good for the heart, lungs, blood vessals, and most other body systems too.

However, don't quote me on any of this...

1) Toned is having low body fat, natural muscular curves.
2) No, just working out would make you look like ahnold. You need equal amount of cardio.
3) Do an hour of weights, followed by 1/2 hour swimming or racquetball .. then chill in the steam room.
