YAWT: Should I work out if my muscles are slightly sore?

I did some weight training stuff on Sunday (2 days ago), using The Complete Idiot's Guide to Weight Training as a guide 😀. My upper body muscles are still slightly sore, only when I stretch or flex them. Should I work out now?

Also, I went swimming for a little while yesterday... bad idea? I don't know if swimming provides enough resistance to be a problem.

stretch, warm up before - then exercise - cool down and stretch. If you do that, you shouldn't hold back.

Go ahead and work out with lighter weight. Use it to stretch out your muscles and get a little blood flowing so you can move the lactic acid out of your muscles. Just listen to your body...use enough weight to get a good stretch, but don't overdo it.

Thanks. The only machines they have in the apartment fitness room are legs only (elliptical, bike), so what should I do to warm up my upper body muscles? I can't run because it hurts my knees.

you can find a whole slew of stretches to do using google. I stretch all the time while working out, like in between sets and stuff. I also found that when I ate a while bunch of bananas a day (like 5 or so), I wouldnt get sore as easily. Might be the potassium or something.

I learned how to stretch in summer school PE 🙂. I'm talking about warming up, like doing some aerobic stuff. Do I not need to do that? Just stretch?

Yes, you should always warm up before working out intensely. I run to the gym as a warm up, since its only like .75 miles away. Walk in, work out, and run home. Get a nice mile and a half run that way also. If you cant/don?t want to do that, do something for like 10 minutes, until you begin to sweat a little. Then stretch and work out. That should do it for you.
