YAWT- Personal best for me at the gym

Sluggo

Lifer
Yes, I had a personal best at the gym tonight, had to brag a little.

Bench Press 315 for 4 reps. I weigh 200

Not bad for a 39 year old guy who has been smoking for 20 years..yes its a filthy habit and I need to quit.

Yeah, there are guys who are a lot stronger, that just gives me something to strive towards.

Props to you, way more than I can bench, I did however tie my pullup record today when I went, took about 5 months but I'm back 😀

Stop smoking and i'll agree that you have accomplished something major.

315lbs or 400 doesn't matter, for YOU it is a new record, you should be proud for your own accomplishments.

I love your posts, but you need to start posting in pounds 😉

decline? flat? machine? no machine?

It was a flat bench, free weights. The bar plus 3 45lb plates on each side.

On the incline and decline I only did 225 for 10 reps.

That is what I used to bench. Then I broke my f'in arm longboarding and now I cant bench 200 lbs. Dont break your arm or you're out for a LONG time. I tried to lift after a year and it still hurt.

Thanks. 150kg ~ 330lbs.

Your 1RM is at least 330lbs. But more about 340-350lbs imo. That is a crazy BP for a non PL!

I'll hopefully nail 330lbs one day. Repping at 220lbs imo is also pretty good. My BP isin't great but alright.

Yeah most people - even those into working out a good bit - will never hit 300lbs for a single rep. They could if they really trained for it, but most guys just never will. I'd like to one day...my best is either 225 X 5 reps or 215 x 10 (this would be superior, but right after the set I was so surprised at that many reps that I immediately questioned whether I'd counted properly).

lol @ counted properly!

Yeah 225lbs for reps is a solid weight. 300lbs and that is big man! I'll get to that in a about 4-5yrs imo.

Not seen many people BP a lot in any gym. You of course get a few monsters who lift insane amounts of weights. This guy at an other gym can PRESS BEHIND NECK 220LBS! That is FRICKING insane.

To give credit where credit is due, much of it goes to my trainer. I did the work, but he helped in laying the groundwork for an unusual workout we did Jan-May 3 days a week full body workout.

Bit of an odd workout. Pick 3 exercises for your main body parts.
Chest
shoulders
lats
mid back
biceps
triceps
traps
quads
hams
calves

3 days a week M-W-F full body workout using 1 of each of the 3 exercises you pick for each body part. For instance for chest you pick flat bench, incline bench, cable flies. M=Flat bench W=Incline bench F= cable flies.

You do a warm-up set 12 reps at about 40% of your workout weight, rest a minute then 1 set at your workout weight. The catch is on the second set you are going for high reps, aiming for total failure at about 18-20 reps. If you hit 20 reps on a workout, the next week you would add weight. Your body adapts quicker than you might think to high reps. At first it is horribly difficult, you are so used to stopping at 10, but after about 12 you seem to get a second wind to help you get a few more pumped out.

During that time, Jan-May while I didnt gain much in the way of visible muscle mass, I gained huge amounts of strength.

During those 5 months my bench press went up about 40 pounds, leg press went up 300 pounds. Of course a lot of those gains were my body adapting to the high reps, but there was also huge strength gains. On our last night on leg presses I did 900 pounds (10 45lb plates on each side) for 19 reps.

Those strength gains will do me well now that we are back on a bulking routing for a few months, before we switch to a cutting routine to get me looking good for a beach vacation. 😛

Oh the punishment we go through just to look good.

Good job. At 50 my best has been 4 reps at 275 lbs but that's always been after I done 3 set of 8-10 at 260 lbs (I do it pretty regularly) I've never tried to do the heaviest I can for just 4 reps without doing 3 sets of 8 but I definately don't believe it would be close to 315 lbs. Of course being 50 I don't think I'm going to push my luck just to see how much I can do, at my age any kind of shoulder injury could mean an extended layoff from training.

On side note, what cracks me up is these short guys with short Oompa Loompa Arms pushing up heavy weight and they think they are all bad. Hell most normal sized men have arms that are 6" longer. That extra 6" makes a lot of difference when you are lifting heavy weight, especially you are doing 8-12 reps.
