You can't doubt it because you probably havn't seriously looked for another job.

Office staff isn't exactly entry-level -- at any given time, I can be accountable for a lot of cash...
It's definatly entry level. They have insurance for thoes things.

Insurance must be very expensive, then..

And yes, office staff is entry level but counts for very little on the resume. I've been supervisor at OMAX and Staples and Cash Office Supervisor as well - it really doesn't count for dick in the real world. (Although it did help slightly with my Bank of America interview, but that's an entry level teller position)

Well, I see bagger/line cashier as entry level..but maybe that's just me.

I think you misunderstand. Working at a grocery store, in general, is entry level.

Assistant common area managers make ~$30k (non-asst. $45-55k), and store managers can easily break $100k...and cost of living isn't as high as other places (eg CA). Apparently anything short of management is entry-level, then?

I'm guessing she is older than you.
Younger people generally get less pay and thats a fact.
The problem is that you started at a lower wage than what Publix start now so you are just basically catching up.

This happens alot at McDonalds.
We starts minor at $6 and people over 18 at $6.50 and $6.75 with experience.
So basically after a yr with a perfect record, the best they can get is $6.50
Yet, if they quit and re-apply, they would get $6.75 because of experience.

Its a imperfect system.
I tell my employees, don't ever compare yourself to anyone else.
If you just focus on yourself and do a good job, you will get rewarded.
Once you start comparing yourself to others, it will affect your job and your performance will suffer cause of it.

Um, dood, even if you're living at home/off your parents, $7.25 is a crap wage for any work environment. I made that much starting out at Office Max like 4 years ago. Especially for being an office cashier and with your experience. I cant believe people are still starting out under 6 and around 7 anymore. Seriously, if you like retail go somewhere else. You're getting screwed over big time.

This is Florida man, there is no state income tax and the standard of living is lower than other places.

Generally that holds true.

We get along quite well..I don't have a problem with her for getting paid what I get (figured I'd clear that up just in case)..but I can't help but wonder why I'm getting paid the same.

You may not have a problem with her, but I think you have a problem with the situation or you wouldn't have posted this thread. If you're being bothered by it you need to address the issue, but as others before me have indicated, be wary of how you tread. I'm not 100% sure of Publix, but almost every big company has a non-disclosure of payrate policy. Personally, I'd whup that *ss if I were the manager and I found out my employees were discussing their payrates because (also as previously noted) it breeds dissention even if you don't think it does.

She has a vagina, boobs, kneepads and a mouth that can suck like a Hoover Vacuum Cleaner. How many of those traits do you have?

The above post made an excellent point. Employees are not supposed to be discussing their compensation. It causes discord.

I'm 19, she's 22. It's a college town..age doesn't really matter.

I have a $0.50 raise for cleaning the bathrooms..basically, she's picked up as many raises in 6mo as I have in nearly two years. Bleh.

I have a problem with the situation, yes..but not with the employee. In the time I've worked there, I haven't heard anything about not disclosing pay - heck, the store manager told me approx what he makes (not exactly, but a ballpark).

Who knows why they've given her more raises. Maybe they like her performance more, etc? You can ask management for a raise if you feel you deserve one, but don't bring up other people's pay.

I would not discuss her pay rate or even hint that you have any issues about how much you make in relation to other employees. Rather, if you think you deserve a raise, ask. Even if you don't think it is against the rules for employees to discuss wages amongst themselves there is a high probability that you could land in hot water. Judging from how much you say you like your job, I would not risk it. Ask for your raise, but don't mention her.

Wise words. I agree wholeheartedly. Never, ever bring up the pay of another employee and don't compare yourself to others. Represent yourself for what you are.

LOL - I was gonna say something to that extent, but I didn't want to get flamed by the ladies. Oh wait, this is AT....😀

i would make sure that no 'discussion' of paychecks were discussed between employees. I have seen a whole department fired because of that.

What usually happens is the starting salary creeps up slowly and hence why raises are given to others...the sad part is the employer usually tries to get more work out of the employee at the same time.

From a sexist standpoint, back in HS this one 'manager' was known to hire pretty girls at insanely high (for the job) starting rates and give them other perks (paid days off, etc).

Sounds like me. If a pretty girl applied, shes hired.

I don't know about you but find another job. Two years and only up to $7.25 an hour? How old are you and how do you make a living? If you're 15-17 nevermind this post. Otherwise I'd get another job!

19yo..with a pretty good foot in the door (according to the store manager, I have a very good start so far) with Publix(could possibly get $30k/yr in 2 years if I go fulltime this fall & go for an assistant management position)..I enjoy my job, but I'm also in a college town. Work is cheap here.

Edit: I'm still living at home, so I can easily survive on this...but still, I think it sucks. 🙂
I live in a college town and I make $8.50/hr. or $10/hr. at my job, depending on which shift I work (UM Dept. of Public Safety).

My girlfriend works at a supermarket here and she makes almost $9/hr. as a starting wage, and she just started two months ago.
