This is pretty much the way to go: http://www.theministryoffitness.com/mof/library/articles/article11.htm

Except I don't have access to the equipment necessary, and for that amount of work and material I might as well buy one. But I don't have the money to buy one, so I have to go with something cheaper.

Google doesn't turn up a lot of information, but I found this pic on this chick's blog: http://bluepoof.blogs.com/photos/uncategorized/squat_bottom.JPG

Is it just some pipe anchored to a couple slabs of concrete? Has anyone made something similar? Any recommendations on materials? Stuff like pipe gauge and diameter. What did you use for the base? She says it's homemade, but I've seen similar stands in a couple gyms.

I would use a bunch of 2x4's and do it like that. Just build a frame and a base at the top. Make sure everything is 'square' and nail that thing together. It would and does work. I've seen one hold in excessive of 280Kg+ and I REALLY doubt you will be up to that in the next 10yrs!

Have the base about 40cm square and that should be sufficient. Make sure you use other 2x4's to support the frame though.

Nah, not going to get anywhere near that amount of weight.

Using wood, how do you recommend making the tops of the verticals? Would a Y configuration work, or do I need something else?

It is just like a 'stool' and you can rest the weights on the top parts and you can put blocks at the top to stop the weight from rolling off.

4 sides with parts across to make it more steady and just a flat top base for the top. 8ply plywood would be very strong and you can use 2 boards of 8 ply or more.

Cool, wood seems like the easiest option (not to mention lighter than those concrete bases. I see a trip to Home Depot in my future.
