YAWT: are protein supplements really necessary to become strong?

Of course not.

In my opinion, a healthy diet, adequate water consumption and regular sleep and exercise schedule contribute far more towards your physical health and any sort of specific training than any "drink" or supplement.

I gained most of my strength while I was on a high protein diet. I never looked big or buff, but my max benchpress was 350.

I don't have the time to workout like I used to, so I'm relatively weak now.

If you're looking to develop definition, the best way to go about it is to lower your body fat.

I was able to get mine down to 5% with a 5 day a week regimen. I only ate Chicken, Fish, and veggies at that point. I only drank distilled water. I hated my life. But man, was I cut.

I'm at about 9% now, it's much better.

If want good protein you can just boil eggs and eat the egg whites, there very high quality protein but there probably not as convienent as protein powders.

first of all...you'll never get the amount of protein you need (if you're a serious bodybuilder) if you rely on your daily diet.

And for protein consumption, you want HIGh protein consumption immediately after a workout. We're talking abotu 30-40grams. Do you realize how many damn eggs that is?????

Lastly - protein in eggs gets absorbed very slowly by the blood. YOu want immediate absorbtion of protein, and the protein we rely on quick absorbtion is Whey Protein (either isolate or concentrate - same sh!t - different cost). MOst protein powders are made of Whey protein and glutamine which help in muscle development.

Anyway...Supplements are damn near essential. WE're looking at trying to consume 1 to 1.5 grams of protein for every pound you weigh daily. Good luck doing that w/o supplements.

3.5 grams per egg white, so at least 9 eggs.

lmao

Supplements are silly. Just eat lots of meat and potatos and work hard. Unless you are a professional athlete or bodybuilder, I would not mess with such things.

If he was eating a lot of veggies he was getting carbs, just not simple carbs.

I don't know if I felt mentally slower, but I felt VERY sluggish from lack of energy and sleep. Working 8-10 hours, being all business on the bike and the weights for an hour or more, and then only eating Wheat Bread toast or oatmeal as breakfast, 8 oz. grilled chicken with mixed veggies for lunch, and then a salmon filet with spinach for dinner is enough to make a man crack.

And yes, as Squisher said, I was getting the good carbs from vegetables. I do not believe in the pure protein diet, but this was recommended to me by my trainer, and it DID work. Too well. I really like the Zone diet if you're looking for something well balanced.

However, that strict a regimen turns you into a freak. You don't see anyone and you barely have time for anything. However, I've never looked more ripped, and I was getting lines and veins in places I did not know I had.

If want good protein you can just boil eggs and eat the egg whites, there very high quality protein but there probably not as convienent as protein powders.

Scrambled eggs, either just the whites or regular, are a good source of protein. However, they cannot compete with the synthetic protein shakes. Whey Protein is good stuff, but then it depends what you're trying to do.

If you wanna get freakishly large, hit the shakes and the heavy weights hard. .If you're looking to develop the smoother, leaner, mainly toned physique that a male model sports, watch your diet, do a lot of cardio and high repitions of a heavy weight, but not one that is at your physical limit.

I was not aware that bruce lee was strong. What are some of his lifts?

Bruce Lee was apparently at the limit of human strength and agility for a man weighing 135 lbs. Could he outlift my 230 lb trainer on the bench? I doubt it. Could he beat the hell out of him? Likely. I agree with what you're saying, though, I doubt Bruce could have been a strong-man attraction at a circus.

Part of his philosophy, as I understand it, was that not enough emphasis was placed on the improvement of the individual as was placed on skill. A stronger abdomen would be better suited to resist the force of a body blow, for example.

For whatever difference in strength/size that there is for the most part they are highly correlational. Massive bodybuilders are very strong and similarly the world's strongmen are very large. Obviously the top BBer isn't a match for the top strongman and vice versa in their respective arenas, but strength and size are very much related.

Either one depends on muscle growth. Muscle growth cannot happen without protein. The more the better, with diminishing returns (100 g/day is perhaps 50% better than 50g/day, but 150 g/day may be only 25% better than 100g, etc.). People often recommend one g per pound of bodyweight, but it's a loose starting point, and you may be able to have good growth with less, or you may need more for optimal.

All of that said, if your meals consist of chicken breast, tuna, steak, etc. no you won't need a protein supplement to have serious gains. But if all your meals are scant on protein, or the protein content is crap (like most vegetable proteins are), then you'd do well to supplement with some quality whey protein.
Supplements are silly. Just eat lots of meat and potatos and work hard. Unless you are a professional athlete or bodybuilder, I would not mess with such things.
Do you work out? In a way, concentrating on a lot of meat intake in one's diet, as you suggest, is supplementing what one would otherwise eat, so why not instead eat protein powder instead of meat? I prefer meat in many cases, but protein powder is often of a higher quality (higher biological value), and cheaper. And it's not like it's fake - it's made with real food products (like whey!).

I believe that one can do well without protein "supplements". When first started working out I made awesome gains. I couldn't afford protein powder, but my mother had no qualms about keeping me stocked on milk and tuna, so I drank and ate by the bucket. I got a lot of protein that way. Nowadays I buy my own food, and mixing up a quick protein drink (as I did just now, and it took about 15-20 seconds), is often a lot easier than baking a chicken breast for 45 minutes. And, as pers said, the highly available and digestable whey protein is great for post-workout. For the same reason it's probably not an optimal pre-bed snack, because it will go through your system quickly (meat would be good).

protein supplements are not necessary at all....they only provide a cheaper means to nutrition.

To all those 150lb 'gorillas' all those protein shakes you are sucking down are probably a waste.

When I weighed in at 175-190 (low low body fat) was when I realized the tuna, turkey and chicken was denting my wallet. I started doing a ISOPURE shake meal mid morning and afternoon.

If you are getting 1 gram of protein for every pound of lean mass you are doing ok....if you aren't seeing gains add another 25%.

no not really, but if you take too much protein u can get constipated. but other than that just do high reps/low weight and you will get "stronger" and little bigger.
