YAWSMNCBT - Lease Expiring On The M35

GasX

Lifer
Well, I stand firmly in the camp of never buy new and don't waste money on a depreciating asset. I also have developed an appreciation for a nice new car as my brother in law gave us an M35 to finish the lease on. So I am now faced with a dilemma. I have to return the M35 in about three weeks and replace it with a car that I pay a LOT less for than the residual on the lease. I plan to pay under $25k.

The M35 is a fantastic car. It's not the best looker out there, but it has a normally aspirated RWD 275HP engine that has gobs of torque at low rpms. It even has a 5 speed auto tranny that is actually a pleasure to listen to the shifts when you open the taps. An added benefit is that the interior is fantastic. Controls are intuitive and there is leather and wood covering everything, heated and cooled seats, and plenty of room in front and back. It is going to be a hard car to replace.

For shits and giggles, I drove a G35 and a 530Xi today. I also looked at a CTS, but despite its nice interior, I don't think I'd ever buy one.

The G35 seemed very familiar. The interior came across as the cheap version of the M35 (surprise!), but everything was in a similar place. The engine sounds the same and my limited test drive didn't reveal any surprises. It drives like a small version of the M35 with the same engine.

The Bimmer was interesting. The interior was nice albeit ruined by the accursed iDrive. Also, I don't get the way they layed out the center console. Driving it was a disappointment. It is clear that it handles well, but I am not used to turbo engines and it is just a dog at low rpm.

Right now, I am leaning towards an Audi A6. It too has a lovely interior and I think I could live without 25HP if the ride is pleasant enough.

any suggestions/recommendations for an old codger like me?

Everytime you buy a car, any car, you are spending money on a depreciating asset.

Mercedes-Benz E Class?

No shit! At least buying used gets you onto the flatter part of the curve though...

Of course...it just makes me laugh when people use that, "never waste money on a depreciating asset" bullshit. For most people buying a car is a necessity. With that in mind, I'd rather spend a little more and buy something nice that I'm going to enjoy for a while. I tend to keep cars for a few years at least and I'm almost never upside down in a vehicle at any point in time.

My Mother-In-Law just bought a 2010 Mercedes-Benz E350, traded in her 2002 E320 with 60k miles on it for $10k and paid cash for the difference. On top of that she owns apartments so she has business use for the car and she will depreciate it I'm sure. She now owns a brand new car free and clear and is depreciating it on her taxes. What's the downside?

I'd drive it like I stole it for two years and then tell potential buyers my wife used it to drive the kids to school...

interesting, this checks a lot of the boxes on the family man checklist and the likes to drive male checklist...

An A6 wagon would be AWESOME. Have you looked into a CPO Audi. If you're not planning on driving it forever and don't do the work yourself, having a warranty may be worthwhile with an Audi. I love my wife's Audi and it has been reliable in its first year (it better be), but knowing Audi/VW history of late...I still would want a warranty if I wasn't doing work myself.

How about a 2004 S4 Avant with 40000 miles on it? Just found it on cars.com. Can't say it wouldn't be awesome to drive around in a 350HP machine hiding in a little station wagon... At least until it breaks down.

Ummm 530 isn't the turbo motor and in either case the turbo straight six (*35) makes boatloads more torque then the VQ down low...

Hyundai Genesis

Edit: Halik beat me to it. The 530 is NA 255HP/220LB I6. But IMO, it sounds 10x better than a VQ ever could.
