YAWOWT: How do I view city chat while not in a city?

I'm at lvl 60 right now and I wanted to be able to see what was going on in the cities, as far as items I might be interested in buying that are being advertised in the trade channel, or maybe joining a group that was looking for a member while I'm outside of this city farming or helping a guildie or whatever.

Is there any way to do this?
 
You can't. The developer decided this was too nice a feature and let us enjoy the game a bit too much, so they put class balance and bug squashing on the backburner to focus on getting rid of chat channels.
 
If they did that you would have idiots spamming THe Barrens chat in every zone like they did with the global LFG channel.

You play alliance? The ability to join city channels outside cities (nerfed in... 1.9?) and the global LFG channel worked well for horde. Now, I'm unable to find groups on my alts, and probably would be on my main if I actually needed to and didn't have my guild. Only the alliance had issues with Chuck Norris jokes. Regardless, all that's needed is a serverwide general channel for people to chat in / make chuck norris jokes in / whatever. Give them an outlet or it spills over to where we don't want it, as we've seen.
 
Everyone (well, mostly the noobs who couldn't figure out the new LFG tool) just typed /join LFG and /join LookingForGroup. Albeit I won't join them... I enjoy the lack of spam and I don't want to play with other crappy players. Alliance LFG was pretty bad in the day and out of pure fun, I'd say "Does anyone know where Mankirk's Wife is!?!?!!" or "LF Mankirk's Wife" in it whenever it got really bad (porn ASCII art, etc). Very few understood this 🙁.

I figured out the lfg tool just fine. What if you want a group on one character, but honor on another while you look? What if you want a group, but can't form it just yet due to being in another group for questing purposes or whatever? What if you don't want to group with a certain person or someone who thinks "Y wut 2 ur b" is a sentence? What if you're LFG for a quest which isn't listed? What if you're looking to start a group that's willing to go to any of a number of instances depending what others joining want?

A tool cannot replace for LFG what a channel can do. It's a square peg and they're shoving it at a round hole, wondering why it won't go in. Again, give them a serverwide general channel and watch LFG (and now trade) clear up. The player made channels have "Xxxxx has joined/left the channel" spam that can get very annoying.
 
I'm not looking to communicate in the city chat channels as much as I am looking to see what is going on in the city channels.

That's easy. At least 3 people are spamming in all caps. Two more are telling the first three that their mothers are promiscuous, perhaps even being paid for their sexual services. 8 people are calling those 3 noobs / nubs. Someone is proclaiming that Chuck Norris clogs the toilet when he pees.

All this because they got rid of global LFG, which was so easy to just turn off... 🙁

Yeah, the LFG tool doesn't work well. Last night, it stuck me in a group with 2 other rogues, a shaman and a druid. No real tank, no real healer. This thing sucks. I'd much rather look for a group myself and my friends and I can fill out a group as we see fit for what we want to do.

I guess I wasn't clear enough; no. It used to be, you had to click join new channel in the chat window options, then type General - Orgrimmar (or whatever). They nerfed it in patch... 1.9? Then lied and told us we'd get it back.
