YAWoWBCT: Socketable gems question?

I don't really know that much about jewelcrafting within WoW... so pardon my terminology...

but I have some Armor that has sockets that gems can go in. Can you put a normal gem into that socket, then at a later point remove that gem and upgrade it to PvP gem or a dropped gem and put that into the socket?

I believe from what I've read that you can upgrade sockets, but the one in there will be destroyed when you do. I have no 1st hand knowledge of this, though.

As Zodder said, yes, that is how it works. The old gem gets destroyed.
