I've noticed sometimes after I have a protein shake I get incredibly sleepy and can hardly keep my eyes open. I feel like I need to take a nap immediately. Strange since protein shakes are supposed to keep you awake and energized. Anyone experience this strange phenomenon and have any tips? I don't want to have to take a nap every time I consume a shake.

I have noticed that occasionally on the mornings where I skip my protein shake I feel less tired than on mornings where I drink one.

Well, anytime you take in a big meal, protein shake or other wise, your body will put some energy into digestion. That and the fact you probably just finished a workout... why shouldn't you be tired?

I like to go running before I go to bed, makes me sleep way better. Oddly, if I go running in the morning, it gets me energized for the day.

Do you guys think it could be the digestive effort that is making me tired? This happens sometimes even if I didn't work out and was taking some whey on a rest day.

Is this a meal replacement or just protein?

Probably digestive effort. I've noticed that after I used to lift I would get very sleepy. Lately, I've thrown in about 50g of dextrose/maltodextrin and I don't get sleepy. Who knows....

Just protein. I usually drink a shake post workout, and then eat about 30-45 min later.
