Just another thread saying how good Vista64 is. I don't understand the hate. It's a good OS and yes it is bloated and uses around ~900MB's as I'm typing this but it looks awesome and runs fast. I made sure everything in my system had 64bit drivers BEFORE I installed Vista64. The only thing I had to buy was a new wireless network adapter as the one I had didn't have any 64bit drivers. It's a great looking OS and it runs smooth. The only problem was when trying to install Vista on a brand new drive, I didn't have the drive set to boot first so it wouldn't let me initially install Vista on it until I went to my BIOS and set it to be the first boot-up drive cus I had 2 drives connected to my system. It installed in around 15-20min which was much faster than I remember XP installing. I'm installing Fallout3 so we'll see how good it runs but all in all I'm happy to have gotten Vista.

I agree that it is a great OS. Just installed 4gb this week and it feels better than ever. My only complaint is the file transfer speed even after SP1 but hopefully it will be fixed by SP2

I've been playing Fallout 3 since like 10pm and it runs smooth on highest everything with highest AF and 4xAA. Vista runs perfect for me. The only thing that annoys me is the damn pop-ups for every little thing but it's a great OS. I'm glad I made the jump.

Yeah i can't handle the UAC. I had to turn it off. I dont care how safe it is or how that is "best" feature of vista. I think the best feature is the indexing and search in the start menu. I use realtively safe programs and I am pretty set in them. I dont use torrents and download crap so i think I can live without UAC.

Though my parents and some friends, thats another story

Edit: Forgot to add win 7 does address this UAC a bit. Also to all the windows haters, Ubuntu and OSX both have this same crap. But you actually have to type password :(. Windows pretty much took ideas and made them better, just like the japs :)

Its not really bloat since Vista actually uses your ram, unused ram is a waste, remember superprefetch etc that Vista has, give it few weeks to learn your habbits and you'll find Vista even faster.

UAC is not an issue for me only a few programs I have where it pops up,end of the day I take extra security for peace of mind.

Btw since you are a gamer I recommend you install latest DX9.0C (Nov 2008) its for Vista as well as XP and you still have your DX10.

DX9.0C link.

I fired up call of duty this morning and hit "resume game". The cutscene started immediately, but without the level load bar. I'm guessing superfetch had kept the level loaded in the ram, started right up. I loved it.

Thank the deities that Microsoft is addressing this in Windows 7. I hate all these useless popups.

You are making a huge mistake disabling UAC altogether. That zero day exploit that Microsoft just released a patch for is a non issue for those that are using limited user accounts under Vista. There are better ways to tame UAC without disabling it's protections altogether. Vista Ultimate and Business users can use group policies to tame UAC to their liking. Vista HP and HB users can use a few registry tweaks to do the same thing.

My suggestion is to create a limited user account for daily use and a non-prompt administrator account strictly for administration purposes. Ed Bott has a great blog post on ZDNet on how to do this.

Popups are easy to fix if they annoy you, link(free software). Shame some users can't be bothered to use google(this is not directed at you).

Again I think UAC is not a big deal(keep it enabled IMHO) infact I'm amazed by how much some users go on about it,its there for a reason and as I have said simple to sort out,you don't need Win7 for that.

I think we got our wires crossed when I was talking about useless popups. I was talking about all the other popups from the taskbar, not UAC. I hardly consider UAC warning me of something wanting admin privileges useless, especially on my limited user account. It is all the other popups I find useless.

Edit:

One other thing Mem, Windows 7 is including a similar tool to the one you linked to. It is a slider, but is basically the same thing. Microsoft is also tuning UAC to prompt less, even if you keep it full on in Windows 7. Hopefully they will backport some of this to Vista when the time is right so people don't have to rely on registry hacks and third party tools (Which add a even bigger attack surface for crackers to use.) to get the job done. If the pop ups weren't a problem, Microsoft would not be addressing this.

Windows Vista is a great operating system, but is far from perfect out of the box.

Main popup I ever get is the ocassional UAC on Vista, the other is Avira which is not worth worring about and very minimal, can't think of anymore offhand(on my PC) again its not an issue.
