Normally I relish poring over the endless set of new acronyms in the home theater forums, but I'm only in town for a week helping my wife move into our new apartment and have a bunch of ikea furniture to put together.

SO, hoping for some quicky answers.

Almost purely TV viewing with some DVDs and xbox. From most to least important, I think size + picture quality are tied for first, reliability, features, ease of transport (would rather not get a 500 lb brick if possible, but we can cope with it), plus probably another thing or two i'm forgetting.

My first thought is to grab the nicest sony we feel like paying for, and the tossup there is between a $500 32" and a $850 HD 16:9 30"

Should I consider other brands, and, how is watching regular TV on a widescreen? Annoying?

Those are both going to be pretty darn heavy. If you need to go up / down stairs, it's going to be really annoying.

I got my "tv" for $1000 and it's a lot lighter :)
