Okay, i had a party of 6 people at a table, bill was $197.21 or so, and i had included gratuity because we are supposed to for any table of 6 or more people. total came to 227 with gratuity. The guy paid with cash, and left. he had left me $270.

i counted it, and literally told a manager, and walked out and caught up to him in the parking lot and told him that he had double grated me in a way like...

"Sir, yes, i was not sure if you were aware, but gratuity was included in that bill"

he responded with a, no i was not aware, but you can keep it anyways.

it made my night, but i was wondering what you would do on here if a server told you that (cuz god knows no server will really be that damn honest)

I'd just tell him to keep it.

EDIT: Props to you for letting the customer know.

totally situational...the guy had a good chance that he was expensing the meal anyways, and may have been spending OPM :)

If it wasnt my money? you'd be keeping it...if it was, it would have depended on your service and my mood...more likely than not, taken 1/2 of the overpay back :0

Seeing as how I'm a server myself, I would have tipped well anyway :p $2.13/hr does not cover taxes

Props for going out there and telling the customer. We never add gratuity to a check, so I've never been in this situation.

it was 6 ppl, him, his wife, his mother, his daughter and her hubby/bf.

not gunna be an expense :D

the only extra expense for them was the ambulance they had to call after the meal as i believe his mother (84 and in a wheel chair) had a heart attack outside the building as they were leaving, but i cant promise you that. :(

Give the server more for their honesty, but not the whole thing.... but then again I would never be paying 200+ for a single meal. If I did have that kind of money to spend, maybe I would let the server keep everything.

She probably had a heart attack right after she realized her son had left a $75 tip...

I probably would have told you to keep it as well. I went to Boston last week and my cab ride was almost $30 from the airport to the hotel (I knew it should have been $10 less, but what can you do at that point?). On the way back, the cabby took all the shortcuts and the fare was just under $17. I gave the guy $30 and told him he was the only honest driver I'd found in Boston and I appreciated it. I had already mentally spent the $30 which is what your customer probably did with his $270.

I hope his mother is ok.
