Recently got back from Spain and didn't have a single negative experience at a sit-down restaurant despite the lack of tipping in Spain. Overall I would say the service was on par with what we've experienced here at home. Really not sure why so many people think that tipping = better service. If anything I would think Americans would be for a no tipping culture since tipping usually involves math

I remember tipping in restaurants at Spain.

No place to add a tip to the receipt for signature cards and we were never prompted for a tip for PIN cards. You can leave some small change or a Euro or two if the service was great but its not expected

I like tipping. It gives a lower base cost on the meal, and you can add as appropriate. I left a 70% tip at the Mexican place last night. Business is slow, so I thought the waiter could use it. Not that I'm a huge spender; it was $20 total, but percentage wise it was a lot, and I got $20 of enjoyment from the meal. If the waiter was a prick, I'd have gotten a $14 meal. I like having the choice.

I don't know anyone who argued that tip structure = better service.

Tipping to this much extent is almost unheard of outside of US.

Billions of restaurants in the world do just fine and provide excellent service without tipping.

you shut your whore mouth, you clearly got terrible service. i mean how could they possibly offer quality service without tips. It just doesn't make sense.

really?

Have any of you people experienced food service in places that have no tipping? (VAT)

Without the incentive to get a tip I would easily put my experiences at more than half of the time being sub par service. No tipping is just a bad idea.

Now, the next part is like super important. If you want your staff that serves you to be pleasant then you have do to more than tell them to be. Tipping those who make the experience more enjoyable should be incentivized to promote that behavior. Those who are not should not be incentivized. You do this through tips. Tips are the market signal that you are doing something that people like.

etc, etc, etc.
