Yate Loon vs. Arctic Cooling 120mm fan

I just bought 4 Yate Loon 120mm fans for my Stacker 810, and while I have not installed them yet (more on that later) I plugged them in to do a simple comparison test to my Arctic Cooling 120mm fan.

The Yate Loon at regular 12V is rather quiet, with a airflow hum near the outer edge of the fan blades. The hum was only noticeable when the fan was within 10 inches of my ear. At 1350rpm (ASUS PC Probe: ~1390 to 1450rpm), some airflow noise is to be expected.

The AC fan (at a rated 1500rpm - no rpm wire) is quite a bit louder than the Yate Loon at 12V. Interesting that a rated 24dba fan is louder than the 28dba rated Yate Loon. My apologies to Bobthelost, as I doubted him on another thread that manufacturer dba ratings are, for the most part, misleading. I am convinced of it now.

I have several Zalman RC56 (7V) 3-pin pass-through connectors, so I hooked up each fan to one to further analyze them. The Yate Loon at 7V (PC Probe: ~975 to 1000rpm) was very quiet indeed, the outer edge hum now only audible 2 to 3 inches away from my ear.

The AC fan at 7V quieted the airflow noise to about the level of the Yate Loon at 12V, however, a whole lot of motor "buzz" became very apparent up close to the fan (I did not hear anything like it at 12V). Such noise probably would be lost in my case, as I have two 80mm fans currently in my case (one on my V-1 VGA cooler and a blowhole fan) that would mask it. However, I think someone with a really quiet system would definitely hear it, as I could still faintly hear the noise about a foot away with my system on.

From my observations, the Yate Loon is clearly the superior fan, and it includes rpm monitoring as well. I am quite pleased with my new purchase. (I bought the AC thinking it had a rpm wire - after all, AC did include nice wire sleeving - but NO RPM WIRE! WTF!?
So heck with it, I decided to try the Yate Loons for myself. Glad I did. Thanks for the recommendation Bobthelost.

The one drawback to the Yate Loons is the enclosed screw holes. As they are now, I cannot mount it to my XP-120 with the wire clips. However, it is nothing a Dremel cannot fix.

I also bought some Acousti silicone polymer black fan mounts to mount the Yate Loons on the back of my case, so I will have to Dremel those as well. I bought the fourth to eventually mount as a blowhole when I mod the top of the case to accept a 120mm fan in place of the 80mm. Should look nice, as I ordered a mnpctech billet aluminum 120mm fan grill for the blowhole. Probably won't have time to do that till June or July though.

So, check out the Yate Loons -- they are one heck of a fan.

One thing you might want to try with the AC fan is to see if it has the pin for a 3rd wire, some times the fan is sold as a 2 tailed one or a 4pin one but is identical to one with the RPM sensor (cheaper to just not use it all the time instead of a diferent design). So you might be able to solder a 3rd wire on and get RPM monitoring.

Aparently it has worked for some people occasionally, but i'm too lazy to find out if my tricools will do it. ;)

Glad to hear there's another yate loon convert around :)

Fan dba ratings, fan CFM ratings, PSU wattage ratings, Bigfoot, Roswell aliens... they all have something in common.

Is the Arctic Cooling fan the one with the unusual looking cage? Do you know if it sucks in air from the sides of the cage in addition to the front of the fan? I think I might want to buy one of those in that case.

I got some 120mm Yate Loons and they are quiet. I'm replacing my 80mm with YLs too. The prices are very, very inexpensive.

Noooooooooooooo! Don't buy Yate Loons, this will create higher demand which will in turn raise prices for me. :(

I've got a few of the AC fans in my lian li. I have them attached to my Zalman fan controller, so they can either run at 800 rpm, 1500 rpm, or anything in between. I really can't compare them to yate loons, since I don't have any, but mine seem to be silent at 800 rpm. They're pretty much inaudible under my desk at up to 1100 rpm. Maybe you got some bad samples, but I don't hear any motor noise on mine. All I can hear in my computer is the idle noise of the hard drive (which is only audible with your ear 10 inches from the case with the side panel off). As for the one with the special vibration-reducing frame, I've got that on my SI-120, and it is MUCH quieter than the others. Inside my case, it's pretty much inaudible even at full speed.

1500RPM on that AC is a bit much. There is no way that's 24.6dBA...I'd think it would be something around 30.

Good point, and I did not test mine at 5V, and the noise was only apparent at 7V. If I hadn't had the Yate Loon as a comparison, I would have stated that the AC was 'quiet.' However, the Yate Loon provided a reference point that the AC simply could not match (to my ears anyway). The AC with the dampening frame may be worthy of a comparo all its own, but I do not own one and I think I have spent enough on fans for a while.

If you are happy with the ACs, by all means, hang onto them. They do provide a reasonable balance between noise and cooling. I've seen the pics of your case, and I just hope my case ends up as nice.

yate loon fans are great! I have 2 different versions of the D12SL-12. They undervolt very well and have great cfm to db ratios and they are cheap. I really cant say much for the AC fans since i dont own any, i think for the price its very difficult to find a better fan than the YL

Sounds like the AF1205, which is not "the" AC 12cm fan. "The" AC Arctic Fan 12 is the one which is exhaust only, and has a deep-well semi-open back design. Mine has RPM monitoring.

"The" AC 12 fan also buzzes, but it can also push a lot of air as compensation -- more than the AF1205 IIRC.

Please confirm which fan you tested.

Aw what? AF12025 doesn't have RPM monitoring? That's crap! Looks like I'll be using Scythes for intake then...

http://tekgems.com/reviews/yate-loon-120-12-25mm-roundup.htm

a test between the yate loon non-led and led versions. also, with a wannabe generic yate loon 120mm.

I love my blue led yate's! I bought a generic red led wanna be yate loon and it definitely is louder than my 2 true yate loons...also the red one is missing the rpm sensor!!

if LED's aren't your thing then you may want to try the new Global Win NCB 120mms.
I had them and they're real real quiet..motor hum was very very minimal but I wanted LEDs to show off my acrylic shroud...so yate was it!
