DSN > TNG :colbert:

I watch TV shows during workouts, mostly cardio. Previously, long back, I had watched almost all TNG, ALL Voyager, ALL Enterprise, some TOS and some DS9.
I started watching TNG few months back (maybe a year) and re-finished the entire series. then started DSN, finished the 1st season today. I must admit when I was finishing TNG I was sad, I was not sure what to watch next. Reluctantly started watching DS9, I thought I would hate it... took a while to get used to it but now I am in love with the show, I seems better than TNG.
I know TNG is a classic and characters and story are very strong and all that, but somehow towards the end, last two seasons, seemed to be drag.. slow.. mundane... If you ask me now, today, I have to say DS9 > TNG. TNG has glamor, star power but DS9 seems to have something more attractive, not sure what it is... It almost seems like it has more character, more warmth to it.

I agree with you OP. The DS9 space battles w/ the dominion sure were a lot of geeky star-trek fun.

You are not alone, I liked it too. Not sure if I would rate it over DS9 or TNG but definitely a good show from the Franchise, all were good, I am fan of all 5.

DS9 > TNG, yes. But it's more for the serious AND continuous storyline. TNG episodes often are standalone, DS9 is a big story arc.

I'm with you OP.

DS9 > TNG >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Voyager

Never seen Enterprise and I won't rate the original series because, while I find it cheesy and unwatchable today, it's a classic.

Love TNG still, and I like Picard more than Sisko, but DS9 itself (the story arcs and such) are better.

DS9 sucked the first couple of seasons, then they said "Heck with it, let's just show a bunch of ship battles every episode."

TNG is better.

So are Voyager and Enterprise, IMHO that's what makes them more interesting.

I really prefer a series where there's a story arc. Now, on the hand, a show like Castle, sure, that's pretty cool but even it has a story arc with the thing about Beckett's mother. It's just not constantly in your face in every episode.

But with that said, I've seen all Voyager, all TNG, all Enterprise episodes. There's room for all of it! But I do prefer B5, DS9, hell even BSG for the continuous plot.

People seem to associate continuous storyline with a show being gooder. No thanks. I can only take so much of that, and repeated viewings are pointless if the entire storyline is based around the suspense of "I gotta see what happens next!" Well once you know what happens, it's kinda lost its steam. I prefer the individual character development through standalone episodes of TNG.

TNG is therefore better than DS9. I have never watched DS9, but I know TNG is better. Just because it is.

DS9 episodes are still relatively self-contained. The first couple seasons don't even mention the Dominion at all, and it's not until later in the series that the long-term plot arc really picks up steam. Even then, it advances rather slowly in the background, and most of the episodes are still self-contained except in a slightly different context. In a way, it's not even that different from TNG.

The same applies to B5, to a lesser extent. Again, depends on which season and which episode, but most are self-contained stories that only advance the plot a small amount. They're not like Lost, where so much weird shit happens every time that missing even a few minutes of any episode or watching anything out of order will throw you into a complete tailspin.

Without saying either was better I will say that the first couple of season of DS9 that dealt almost solely with the Bajorans were terrible, but once they dropped that garbage the show was really good.

I just watched DS9 this past summer and I still think TNG was better. More episodes in the "good" category. Better main cast, better guest actors. The war took too damn long and got boring long before they ended it.
And not too many episodes stick in my mind as being classic.

Sisko plotting with Garak to murder Romulans was pretty awesome.

I personally think long arcing stories are a higher form of art than episodic. That doesn't automatically make them better, but when done well they generally are. Saying episodic is better than arcing is like saying oil paintings are better than fresco since they're easier to make well.

I liked DS9 better than TNG, even the first few seasons. There was something just a bit kooky about "balls of light" random entities entering TNG every few episodes which just ruined any immersion.

If you think DS9 > TNG after season 1, you will think DS9 >>> TNG after watching seasons 2 and 3.

And as another said, if you like DS9, you will probably like Babylon 5. Sort of similar to one another. Babylon 5 is more gritty (more realistic scenarios) rather than the happy go lucky Star Trek stuff. Quark is a good example, a bit flamboyant, has alot of personality. Makes the show have a certain charm, which is fun to watch. But is not a realistic character. Same with the Trill, etc etc etc. (I hate trill episodes!) Babylon 5 actually has a scene in it (that most shows/star treks did, which is a dig on star trek) where the captain asks the crew "This is going to be a suicide mission, if you want to back out now, do so now..." And they actually had a character walk out. Star Trek everybody is "Yep lets go! I won't let you down captin'." Babylon 5 is hard to watch until it gets going (as it tries to fill out some backstory) so you sit there the first half the season going "huh?" But is excellent throughout season 2-4... One of those shows "I can't wait to watch the next episode." Where you don't get that as much in the star trek series.

Enterprise and their stupid Chrono cold war or whatever dumbshit it was called was HORRIBLE. Good riddance. The only good season was the last one and by then it was too late.

Yeah they were trying to copy DS9 and Voyager by having long story arcs covering a whole season and that sucked.

HUMANS HAVE JUST ENTERED SPACE! EVERYTHING IS NEW AND STRANGE! MAKE SOME BETTER EPISODES!

I dont think I've ever seen as much potential thrown away as in Enterprise. They had already hit a rut in the middle of the first season! Who the hell was running things?
Oh thats right, Berman and Brega. Jackasses!
