Do the characters in Star Trek get paid for enlisting in the federation?

If so, does the federation collect taxes?
If not, how do the officers buy things at Quarks?

It's been a long time since I watched the shows but my memory says they got a minimal stipend. Technically they did not need currency on any Federation planet but they got a minimal "salary" for when they needed to transact with a non-Federation entity.

They get paid. They definitely did in Kirks era. No one is starving or living in poverty, but wealth is still disproportionately distributed. It exists in the TNG era as well as Dr Crusher can charge a bolt of cloth to her account in the pilot.

Internally, the Federation never had much of an currency economy. They had credits but it's not really the same context as any money we use. Externally, it was either barter or use their currency. Ferengi (and Quark's bar) used gold-pressed latinum, Cardassians used lek, etc. UFP is pretty much a post-scarcity socialist poster child.

This is all explained in someway by Capt. Picard in First Contact when the girl is aboard the enterprise and she asks how much this all costs, or something along those lines, and he explains that we have no currency in the "future" and we work to "better ourselves and society".
