YASTCT: Yet Another Shipping to Canada Thread - POLL added

I sold a laptop battery to an AT member in Canada. There was some problem and the envelope wasn't delivered - he had to go to the post office to get it. Anyway, when he finally got it, the envelope was torn and had a hole in the side.

The PM:
There was a Global Priority envelope there waiting for me but it was .. gasp .. EMPTY!...There is nothing there but the shipping foam and a hole in the side. I suppose big enough for something like a battery to slip through? I opened it before noticing the rip, feeling suprised that it's so damn light. I asked the postal lady and she said there is nothing they can do.

It was a large Global Priority Mail flat rate envelope with just the battery and some padding. I did not buy insurance. I will do that next time.

Does anyone have experience with this and have any suggestions, besides "this is why I never ship to Canada?" Please let me know. Thanks.

Do you think I should refund the buyer's money in full? I think I probably should, but I want AT's advice.

Sounds like the customs employee needed a new laptop battery. I alwasy get stuff that has been opened by customs and they seal it back upi with yellow customs tape. It is worth a shot.

GPM is the USPS's version of fringe benefits. Cannot buy insurance, not trackable...I swear, it's just a way to deliver your goods to some USPS employee...

i dont ship to canada no more. i still owe fedex 50 bucks for shipping a laptop there. stupid buyer never paid and now fedex is suspending my account.

screw the canucks. their money sucks too!

Do you know how to file a claim with customs?

It looks like there isn't much I can do about this. Am I responsible for refunding the money to the buyer? I'm leaning towards yes, but I'm adding a poll anyway.

Oops. 😉

I think you should refund them - the packing job really wasnt appropriate for shipping a battery IMHO. I would have used one of the free USPS small boxes they have and put bubblewrap around the battery.
