i'm kinda getting an itch to replace my current speakers: Cambridge FPS 2000 4.1 Digital

i want to turn my PC into an all-in-one entertainment system: games, HTPC, TV, music, etc.

so with that train of thought, i've been checking out places for speakers that don't have ridiculous shipping prices. if you guys can recommend anything, that'd be great. right now, i have these two speakers sets (one 5.1, one 2x floor standing HT speakers)

Jaton 5.1 HT speaker set

SDAT HT Floor Speakers (pair)

my soundcard is a hercules game theater XP.

here's an article on it (did a quick google search, didn't read really)

it has optical, coax, and analog out (and midi in/out)

You're going to get "wrong forum" messages soon but i don't really care, I'll answer you anyways:

Jaton - the reviews are ok but your cambridge set is by a good manufacturer - you're taking a gamble with the jatons. Get a logitech 5.1 system - they're great for the money

That Jaton set is going to sound awful for music.

$100 isn't much to spend for speakers, keep saving up.

<$100

Home theater or computer gaming? Computer gaming - get a logitech 5.1 system.. they have a cheapie set that's pretty good.

Home theater? Save $400 more and get a onkyo ht in a box

i'm not looking to get an entire HT setup at one moment... more like gradual acquisition :)

edit: my goal is to kinda get everything in one... something that can do games/music/movies well. i'm no audiphile, so please also keep that in mind :)

those jatons are meant for desk use not room use.. you know, speakers all around your chair doesn't require much wattage...

If you want to have room filling sound, i suggest saving for a receiver +some speakers... keep in mind $100 isn't going to get anything... A receiver will cost you that much used. You can get a great deal on decent speakers if you get a fluance set - about $200 sans sub.. The fluances go pretty deep but you should eventually get a subwoofer...

I'm too tired to talk into detail about anything this morning.

That being said, you aren't going to find anything worth using as a HT setup for under $100. You get what you pay for and this is DEFINITELY one of those cases.

waggy - i'm sold, where can i spend all my money!!! ;)

amdualy - 4-5 years ago i bought my cambridge fps 200 for $80. i know they're definitely not professional grade, but they've been GREAT speakers. why can't other sets be had for a similar price? i know im not going to get perfect sound, but that comes with a limited budget.

ok i have bad hearing. deaf in one ear and partial in the other. even i would NOT purchase $100 speakers (unless they are back ones for surrond sound). heck the front speakers i have now cost me $140 each.

Is there anything besides spontaneity keeping you from saving your money? Get yourself a decent receiver (probably $150-200 used) and a pair of $200 bookshelf speakers (cheaper/better for that price if used) and you're on the right track. I will warn you that starting a HT system is almost as bad as starting crack habit because you'll want the rest of it (center, sub, rears) so, so bad.
