So I see all these threads about ex's not returning money, roommates lying about utility bills and not paying their share, arguments with roommates over rent...
I'm wondering if I'm being too trusting with my ex-roommate.
So back in august, I agreed to rent a place with a friend. We put down the deposit and had everything worked out. Then, two weeks before we were gonna move in, I got a job offer that would require me to move. Not wanting to screw my friend, I agreed to pay rent through december, and he would find a new roommate to take over my place in january. I wrote him an $800 check for sept through december, thinking I'll just pay it in one lump sum so I wouldn't have to mail a check to him every month. The deal was when he found a new roommate, I'd get back my deposit money, and we'd call it even.
So I figure the apartment is still partly mine since I'm paying rent, and last week I told him I was going to be coming into town for a couple days and would be using my room. He then informs me he's already found someone to take over my share. Hmm.. awfully shady how he didnt tell me before. But whatever.. I asked him since he's found someone, can I have my deposit, plus $200 for december rent money. He mentions he's kinda low in funds, he got laid off couple months ago and was living off unemployment. He said he'll have money in january, and he'll pay me back then.
I'm wondering now whether I should be aggressive in getting my money back now. I don't want him to disappear on me in the next few weeks. In his defense though, I did once loan him $600 and he paid me back in full, albeit a little late. But he had a job back then, so I wasn't as worried he'd disappear the next day without telling me where he went.
Advice? Get my money now? Or trust that he'll pay me in january?
