YART (Yet another roomate thread)

Let me preface this with.. My roomate get along fine... There haven't been any issues to speak of other than recently with my roomate and I. His girlfriend and I has been a different story, but I seriously have watched my manners and have ignored her for the most part just to keep things civil.

My roomate has recently gotten engaged to a girl I dont get along with and they recently got a dog. Even before both of these, she has basically lived here and they "claimed" the common area. Now that they have a dog, they put gates up everywhere and put up a makeshift pen that they take down.

He had put the deposit on the dog before asking me, although he did ask me after he drove two hours to look at dogs at a breeder, put money down and came back to ask me if it was ok. I told him yeah (what was I going to say? Yeah I could have said no, which he said if I would have he would have cancelled the deal.. but that's not cool).

Most recently, I had come home with bags in my hands after reading the Hot Deals forum.. lol.. Anyway, the dog was excited, jumping at my feet. I was saying hello to it and whatnot, trying to make my way upstairs, when all of a sudden she says, "Can you please just go upstairs so the dog doesn't get excited, we're trying to potty train it?" In a mean distaining tone. I told my roomate later that I was 2 seconds away from telling her to get the f out.

Of course this is just me ranting, I did tell him I wanted to talk to him about some things. Just that I didnt' want them claiming the downstairs with the dog and being told what to do in my own home. Anything else I could think of that I dont like is petty and they aren't that bad.

It never got to this.. he said he went apartment hunting and found a deal for whatever and said hes going to move out. He did say he was going to pay March's rent to give me time to find a roomate but I'm thinking he's more responsible than that for the lease?

I am the main leaseholder and he's listed as Occupant only.. but does that change anything? I just need clarification.. if anyone has some advice, I'm all ears.

Cliffnotes:

- Roomate situation turns bad when dog is bought, girlfriend becomes fiancee
- Tired of being restricted to my own room in my own house
- Dog now owns living room when they are home
- Was going to nicely ask roomate to please be considerate, but decided to find another place first
- Wondering if roomate is liable for rent until EOL (end of lease).

Thanks!

if you guys dont have individual leases then I doubt he's responsible for any rent once he moves out.

Hes on the main lease as occupant only.. I'm thinking it could go either way depending on the law... in Ohio btw.

I always hear great things about roommates.

It really hasn't been that bad.. we've been excellent roomates, I haven't complained about messiness or anything.. she just wants to ruin things cause she hates.. well everyone.

if he doesnt pay his share of the rent, is it going to fall on you to pay the difference, or will the landlord go after him? If the landlord goes after him, then he would need to continue paying, or find a sublease. If you would have to cover the difference then nothing happens to him. (i think.)

I'm pretty sure this is how it normally works... I'm just wondering with the occupant only part.. I'm not too sure.
