YART: Yet another Resume Thread

So ATOT.. I bow to your superior intellect..

I have a link below to my resume. I think it looks very plain and boring. Any suggestions on Sprucing it up? What would you do to make this stand out?

On a side note, if any of you are resume EXPERTS.. I'd even consider paying for a reworked resume.. I graduate with my MIS degree in May, so the job hunt starts in 2 weeks or so.. Just want to get as much of an edge as possible.

I agree, you want your resume to stand out and this one is straight up Microsoft Word, "I didn't work too long on my resume..." material. Spend more time on it, add in more detail. People forget that there's a lot of space wasted with the default 1" margins in Word. I fit a whole lot of information on my resume, especially as an IT expert.

Hmmmm...only if the HR clerk sorting them is a man, otherwise you might have to resort to something else. 😉

Well.. My username basically my name anyway... My phone number is fake.. And I've done a few trades so my address is out there..

Rogue - Thanks for the tips and the link. I was able to open it, and it is definitely different from any format I've come across yet. I'll consider it for my revisions.

Hi,

I'd personally put education above experience...anyone can have experience, but a degree is something many employers are looking for these days.

You definitely have too much white space on there. I do like the fact that you used a table to organize your fields, but still space them out. I would recommend right-adjusting the dates/years of your experience to help balance out the white space. Definitely cut down on the L/R margins a bit and make the table wider to accomodate again for the excessive white space. I would also personally expand on your objective for your job. I'd say at least 2 lines. I would bold or italicize key-words, such as your major, if it's specific to your career field of choice, the word skills, manager, responsible, etc.

You have it backwards buddy. A degree is something that most employers assume unless you're going after Walmart-type jobs. I would say that 90% of the resume's I've read recently have the degree stuff at the end and I've interviewed approximately 20 developers since the beginning of the year. THe only ones that didn't have the education at the end either didn't put on there to begin with or were fresh out of college.

I think I am with Amiga on this one... Everyone that is applying for the jobs I am after has a degree.. I think its my GPA and Specifically my work experience that sets me apart..

I do like the ideas on eliminating white space and putting in more info. I have a list of "power words".. but not sure if I like them.. Anyone know of some specific words employers are looking for? What would you want to see on my Resume? I interview well, so If I can just get my foot in the door with the this resume...

take out the objective - its too broad and general and generally useless
Every bullet point should be some kind of action verb i.e. "Provided technical support for blah blah blah"

the format looks really bad as well...
