(Yet Another Religion Thread)

Inspired by the thread about Jehovah's Witnesses, is the whole "trinity" idea monotheistic or polytheistic? Three is pretty clear to me, it's more than one - ergo, Christianity is polytheistic.

Trinity Christians are Polytheistic, but don't tell a Christian that.

They have a bunch of double-think instilled since they were small about how christians are monotheistic.

Noooooo!!! ATOT isn't ready for a discussion about the holy trinity!!!

However, I think we could handle the holy quininity:
Earth!
Fire!
Wind!
Water!
Miscellaneous Organ!

I guess having only the "original" elements would've been better than the alternative.

Hydrogen!
Helium!
Lithium!
.....
I am Captain Mendeleev!

Following that 45 minute intro sequence, the first episode would feature the untimely death of the infant character Technetium.

Even though they say it's monotheism, they treat it like polytheism. There is definite separation between the father and the son and the holy spirit and the son, although the father and the holy spirit are both vague enough ideas to sort of intermingle in the mind. I say it's polytheism, but with only 2 clearly defined deities.

Heh, in my Sunday school we were literally taught 1+1+1=1 in regards to God.

Thinking about it now reminds me of Alice thinking 6 impossible things before breakfast.

Catholic school, they spent probably half of sixth grade drilling into our heads that the trinity is just one god.

The Bible does not ever say that god is a "god head" or part of a trinity in any way (though I could use some god-head right now). It alludes to the trinity in several places, but doesn't ever actually say it.

God's name, Elohim, is plural.

Knock yourself out. Or, more in line with Christian tradition, knock your neighbors out. Keep in mind while you read this crap that early Christians murdered, tortured, burned people alive, and wiped out whole towns over the three-gods-in-one debate.

Also, this.

3 aspects of the same being, perfectly united.

If the concept seems baffling, think of how we consider our bodies to be individual bodies, and yet they are each composed of a trillion cells.

Or think of how a human being is considered to be mind and body, yet 1 person.

The biblical doctrine of the trinity is not one that is named such in the bible, but study of the bible shows that God acts and reveals Himself throughout scripture through the embodiment of His word, spirit, and mind (the father).

As humans made in the image of God (though we are corrupt), we are like Him in some regards.

The emperor of the empire that killed our messiah and persecuted his people declared that 1+1+1=1. Therefore, 1+1+1=1.

Are you single entity? Some people refer to being as mind, body and spirit. At least its an analogy you can think about.

More like components of one entity. But then you are getting into semantics.

(And I consider the mind to reside within the brain, and the brain is part of the body, with "spirit" residing in the same realm of superstition and folklore as religion.)

The question is rather absurd in the first place since quantity itself is an idea in the minds of humans and not any property of reality. Reality has no gaps or divisions. We project that idea onto reality from the patterns we interpret in our sensory data.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
