it's offensive that it's JUST BLACK history month.

if you are going to do it, then make it a MINORITY history month, but just as you expect, some minorities think they are more equal than others.

I think a whole month is a bit much. "Black History Week" would have been more appropriate.

I think that at a time, it had it's place (many moons ago)...but today's society has changed so much that it's getting a bit "long in the tooth." It's no longer just a black vs white issue as it was when the concept was first thought up. There's a larger Asian population and Hispanics now outweigh blacks in US population numbers.

If we're going to continue to have a black history month, we need to have an Asian history month and a Hispanic history month too IMHO.

My brother always calls me to say "You HAVE to be nice to me for a month. It's black history month"
He somehow learned in school(2nd grade) that non blacks have to be nice to blacks during this time.. and its stuck with him ever since.

We apparently have those already.

I kinda have mixed emotions on this one. On the one hand, it's nice to recognize contributions of black americans over the years, but on the other hand there are plenty of other minorities that don't have their own month (this is especially poignant with hispanics officially being the biggest minority now). Secondly, it's sadly ironic to me that we have a very highly promoted month for black people to observe and have a sense of place/accomplishment/pride yet they continue to be their own worst enemy in many ways. I'm definitely not saying that racism isn't alive and well, but I don't feel it's really the biggest barrier facing the advancement of black americans these days; the family thing is completely screwed up (kids out of wedlock, absentee fathers, etc), the rate of incarceration is crazy, and above all there seems to be a nasty case of what the Aussies call "tall poppy syndrome" where those who accomplish much are the object of resentment by those who have not.

I dunno..I'm kinda rambling, but it's just something I think about a lot living in Atlanta. I love the diversity, but observing the underlying problems in the city most associated with someone like MLK is just depressing.

Why post another thread about it?

As i posted in the other thread, its a bunch of crap, it should be american history month 12 months a year.

When is White History Month?

Wasnt everyone waiting for this response?

I was counting the posts!

I like black history month. When I was in school, I honestly learned about things and people that I did not learn in my every day history classes.

A month is a bit long. They ought to break it into a bunch of smaller periods and each period focus on a different ethnic group. Sure, black history is fascinating, but I'm sure Indian history and Asian history and Latino history is also pretty fascinating.
