YART: Pope acknowledged EVOLUTION!

Endorsement of the truth of science has been as persistent a theme of John Paul II's papacy as his doctrinal conservatism, Vatican observers say. In a major speech to the Pontifical Academy of Science in 1996, he came close to endorsing the theory of evolution.

"New knowledge has led to the recognition of the theory of evolution as more than a hypothesis," he said, adding that the idea of natural selection "has been progressively accepted by researchers, following a series of discoveries in various fields of knowledge".

NOTE: I searched for this, couldn't find it. So I apologize if it's a repost. Also, I thougt we had a religon forum?

We established in a thread about a year or more ago, that less than half the Christian denominations "don't believe in evolution."
They are just more vocal and less evolved.

wow really? that's surprising to me, because most of my christian friends think that evolution "doesn't make sense"

you know this did happen in 1996.... not exactly breaking news

Is to me! 😛

The catholic church's official position is that evolution is indicated by science but Man was a special act of creation. The pope has never contradicted that position. They accept evolution because it doesn't conflict with their theology, the evolution of man does though and they will not accept the validity of man being anything other than a special act of creation.

the Cathlolic church hasn't been against evolution... which is why we have Protestant Christianity, becuase the Catholic Church's teachings are somewhat skewered...

I don't like the Pope. you know he also says he's the replacement Jesus? yeah. go translate his seal.

For the lazy, what's it say?

Most Christians sects do not recognize that the Pope has any authority over their faith, just FYI. Perhaps you've heard of Martin Luther (not King 😉 ) and the Protestant Reformation?

Martin Luther thought that the Pope was the Anti-Christ.

Guess he was right.

Actually the title of the Pope is that he is the Vicar of Christ on Earth, meaning that he acts as Christ's representative for the church on Earth, not Christ Himself or as Christ's "replacement."

I never met a Christian who didn't believe in it till I got to college and some of the more agressive ones wanted me to come to Bible studies, etc....

same here pretty much (i didn't know very many christians before i got in to college actually)... actually i knew one before college... she thought fossils were part of a mass conspiracy that the scientists were all in on 😀

makes you wonder what is wrong with college... you'd think people would be more educated or something but no... they have the worst possible knowledge of evolution and you can tell what little they know they got from whatever anti-evolution sermon they heard from some college evangelist that's also "really good at guitar for praise"

and yea, i get the bible study thing too... i get invited to go to christian camps all the friggin time. i keep on telling them that it would be boring for me because i'd have nothing to do since i don't believe in god, but they don't listen to me. wonder why...

the Catholic church finds no conflict between faith & reason - it considers them
complementary means of discerning truth.

if you want to know what Catholics believe, then try asking a priest
or a Catholic director of religious education.

Oh yeah... the theory of evolution is not incompatible with Christian faith, but then that subject has already been debated to death and beyond.
