What do you call that area around your house
that you hang out in, have barbecues, play horseshoes,
football and badmitton, and gotta mow sometimes?

It's always the same area but I find
people refer to it differently at different times.

If they're just hanging out in the area, its "the yard".

When they gotta mow it and don't want to, it's "I gotta mow the grass"

But if they think they did a good job mowing and it looks all
nice and manicured, then it's "the lawn"

Yard, IMO, denotes the entire yard, whereas grass/lawn are used synonymously to describe the actual grass...

"mow the lawn"

"in my back/front yard"

sometimes "cut the grass"

or to my daughter "stay on the grass" "stay in the yard"

Yard = The area around your house
Grass = The green stuff that grows in your yard
Lawn = a large collection of MANAGED (cut, watered, cared for) grasses that are usually in a yard.

Edit: Clarifications on lawn

Agreed, except I don't really ever say "lawn."
