I heard that AMD have put a lot of work on crossfire and there should be huge improvement in that department (along with some babble on how it makes sense because AMD is a CPU company and stuff like that).

Did anyone heard that/about that? From where? Was it for the inq or fudz?

And while we are at it, and wild, completely unsubstantiated speculation, or maybe even a rational thought on the matter?

Well, at the very least it will be like the X1950 Pro and the compositing engine is on the GPU now so no more master cards.

There have been several rumors that Crossfire can work any dual-PCI-E slot board. I even was able to get AMD/ATIs low-level tech support to confirm that it would work on my Nforce4 SLI board. AMD made a statement a while back about how Crossfire was an open platform and they didn't do anything in the Catalyst drivers to prevent Crossfire from running on any platform. Unfortunately, nobody seems willing to try it on thrid party platforms to test if it is true.
